As a really dull insurance bod here's my tuppence worth.

Insurance is based upon the principle of 'utmost good faith' in which anything that may affect the judgement of the insurer must be disclosed whether asked the specific question or not.

If you don't disclose the conviction it could be claimed you are mis-representing yourself and therefor the insurance can be cancelled on the grounds of fraud.

Even non-fraud related convictions may mean that the person concerned is a greater 'moral hazard'.

I suggest you come clean about it and only ring round for quotes as the internet will not cope with 'non-standard' insurances. Otherwise imagine if your house is destroyed and the insurers do a check (often at claim time) and then decide you were not covered.

Hi Ole, I'm actually surprised insurance companies won't honour people with previous convictions! I really am! I mean are ex offenders not entitled to own a house and get it insured if they caused some sort of a mistake previously? They must meet somewhere in the middle I think. Anyway, what about this company, could these help?

Well i've bitten the bullet and rang up and confessed my sins, got to wait until wednesday for a reply back from their head office.Had a quick look on the site, might need to look in a bit more detail come wednesday we'll see.

To be fair if its a conviction for fraud then right enough, but not something from a footy match as on this occassion.never mind wait and see, cheers

It's not all insurers that will decline convictions and most will have a look depending upon what the conviction involves. It's all about selection criteria and some insurers want whiter-than-white whilst others will target a different market segment.

Imagine if your conviction is for violence of some description and you want your home contents covered. Now after a heavy drinking session and your lot losing to us next week you may decide to smash something up. Not a particularly attrictive risk from the insurers perspective.

You have done the right thing Ole as if you are going to lie then you may as well not pay for the insurance and save some cash as methods of catching people out are becoming ever more sophisticated.

Good luck with getting it sorted lad.

PS was it for streaking naked at Old Trafford?!!!

I was there with a mate who had been having trouble at home, so met up with the idea of taking the game in and having a few beers and a chat, went off on our own sat in a pub,got rounded up by the old bill when a load of lads came into(we knew them all)anyway, got taken to the pub near the station, things went off and got arrested for public order etc, nothing heroic or brave just pulled and charged, dont get me wrong i believe what goes round comes round, just on this occassion it wont me honest, but there we go,in the past got away with stuff so no complaints really, just frustration now 18months later this with the insurance.

Honesty has paid off,"on this occasion we see no reason to decline your insurance renewal" just remember to mention it if you ever make a claim, should be no problem, the man said, the other quotes I had were with different companies when looking for cheaper options.
So there we have honesty does pay,and for good measure he told me to make sure that any convictions get removed from my records after 5 years, because the police don't take them off unless you ask!

Thanks all those that suggested telling,it could of gone horribly wrong, and me worrying for months if I needed to make a claim in the future.
