Did anyone see the special report on bbc news this morning, live from Belfast?
Travelled down to Cobh and the Titanic museum there.

One of the artefacts was a recovered letter in a bottle washed up some time later
Written by a young Irish lad and thrown overboard towards the end it read
15/4/12
From The Titanic
Goodbye all

Thought lasts night commeration from Belfast waterfront was excellent, even Katie Melua!

Only in Belfast can we celebrate the sinking of the unsinkable ship with the loss of over 1500 lives.

Ian, didnt come across as a celebration to me.
Respectfully done, with marvellous narratives & accounts of the ship starting to be built through to the aftermath as told by the survivors.
All wonderfully re-enacted by those involved.

when you think of how late in the year to be sunk by an iceberg. Great commemorations both north and south.

I'd heard that about the message in the bottle, apparently his mother had given him a small bottle of Holy Water for luck when he was leaving for America and that's what he used for the note.
The bottled washed up near to where he was born in Cork about a year later.

Thanks for that info on Cork.
Wondered where it had come ashore.

If you're from, or live in Belfast, you can't begin to express how sick to death you are of hearing about this boat. For those who had relatives on it I appreciate that they'll get something good out of all this, but for everyone else it's painful.

I love our country at times, but we celebrate and/or are good at the wrong things.

A boat that sank.
An alcoholic footballer.
We're good at boxing, going fast on bikes and shooting.
We have tourist trips for murals about a long, tragic war that nobody actually won.

Titanic this, Titanic that. It's painful.

Titanic museum looks like a bloody ice-berg as well. Just saying.

Bit ironic making puns and piss takes on a tragedy with a huge loss of life that happened on same date as Hillsborough... What's the time frame for this to be acceptable so we can let Chelsea fans know? 40, 50, 60 years??

Nit doing that at all, just having a bit of fun with Insidious.
Read my previous posts about the Titanic and you'll see.
Or carry on being a sanctimonious prat,
Either one wont bother me.

lots of stuff that's celebrated or commemorated in Ireland both north and south is like this.that's the sort of people we are.most of our greatest heroes were drunks or tortured geniuses.

I thought they were funny, and I love a pun (joined late so all the obvious ones were gone) just struck me as ironic we have one thread remembering the 96 who lost there lives on this date nigh on a quarter of a century ago, another (rightly) abusing the Chelsea fans for not honouring or respecting the memory of those lost in the tragedy on the anniversary of the event and a 3rd taking the piss out of another tragic event on its anniversary.

I think the fact is we (people in general) take the piss and joke about tragic events, not sure if this is a British thing but the texts or jokes start as soon as an event occurs, think shuttle explosion, Tsunami, even famines in Ethiopia or celebrity deaths, think Beadle, Whitney, Jacko, Diana etc.
