Argos have got a couple of (what I think are) very good deals at the mo on LCD and plasma tellies, so I've just invested in a bigass plasma mofo.
Someone mentioned though, that when you get anything like that, the 'out of the box' settings are unlikely to be anywhere near ideal to get the best out of them...
Techy question then, how do you go about finetuning gear like that? Would it vary from model to model or are there certain settings you need to adjust on all of them?

One thing to always do is turn off any Noise Reduction. The default out of the box setting is usually up to max and it should be turned off completely.
The manufacturers seems to think detail is the same thing as grain/noise.
This is handy

What one did you get Mel? I got my calibration settings just by trawling the net. Some proper geeks out there who spend their time doing all this for us :)

Slightly related, when the fuck are the TV companies, government, whoever going to improve the aerial digital signal, any sign of high winds, snow, rain, storms going on between my house and the TV mast (somewhere near Brizzul) knocks my signal bandy resulting in me missing half my favourite programmes...
Is it going to improve or am I totally fucked without satellite ???

Well I was going to get this one
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5365692/Trail/searchtext%3ELCD+TV+HITACHI.htm
Hitachi 42'' LCD FHD1080P - £399
1500:1
but they're out of stock everywhere and the specs seemed to be better on this one
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5367092/Trail/searchtext%3EPLASMA+TV+LG.htm
LG 42'' Plasma PG2000 - £469
20,000:1
I know contrast ratio's not that reliable an indicator, but it's got that 100hz technology and a few other bits too.
Righto, will hit t'net for individual settings etc then. Didn't know if there was a standard procedure or not.
Dont whatever you do get a plasma - LCD and now LED is the way forward ;)
Gahhh!!!
I thought LCD had the better technology, but plasmas were better if you ever need a blood transfusion?!?

try www.avforums.com they might give you ideas on settings,if its a plasma keep your settings down a bit for the first couple of weeks because some do suffer with screenburn

The best TV out there is a Plasma. The Pioneer Kuro series.

Cheers, will try that forum. Was a bit alarmed by reading about screen burn, but it was an old article so I'd hoped the newer models were better protected against that - this 'white flash' thing..?
I got the LG 42PG2000 in the end.

I thought Plasma's were getting phased out to be honest. LCD and LED sales are through the roof but that one will do the job Mel. 3 HDMI sockets is useful too. This is my Sammy, I love it. Cost £800 though, as Candyman said earlier, the Kuro's are brilliant, possible the best in the world but they'll set you back a couple of grand.

Totally disagree with you.
- Plasma is the more established technology and has been developed for longer and is now at a stage where it is offering some great pictures. However, LCD started off slowly but is catching up. I'll ignore all the detailed technical arguments, of there are many, because at the end of the day it's about how it performs on a daily basis. The arguments in a nutshell, in general:
- LCD is great for games (X-Box, PS3 etc) and animation (e.g. Shrek). The quality of representation is brilliant.
- Plasma is better for motion, particularly sports and movies
- Under 32" LCD can match Plasma reasonably easily; upto 42" they can be an even match; beyond 42" Plasma currently wins hands down - LCD can pixalate, cause ghosting, cause shadows and so on.
- Plasma consumes almost twice the power of LCD
- Some brands are better than others, e.g. a Pioneer Plasma is going to be better than a Samsung Plasma, but is likely to cost twice as much.
- There are NO SUCH THINGS as LED TV's; there are LCD TV's with LED backlighting, which isn't the same thing.
- However, there are OLED TVs; ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC TECHNOLOGY. Currently the largest available are a 7" and an 11"; they cost upwards of £3500. Samsung is rumoured to be the first to market with a 40" OLED screen; when this will be and how much it will be is anyone's guess; if this is anywhere in the next twelve months, I'll be gobsmacked. Likewise what the prices will be, who knows? Don't expect much change out of a few of grand.
- Best HD-TV at the moment is Pioneer Generation 9 Kuro (plasma), but no doubt out of most people's price range. The next best is the NeoPDP range from Panasonic (plasma), which has models for all pockets. These are followed closely by the Sony LCD range, although the Samsung LCD/LED range is quite impressive.
So, in essence it's horses for courses. Both LCD and Plasma have their merits, but if you are considering a LCD over 42", go and have a proper look at the TV, in terms of how it handles motion and blacks.

i know yer being just a tad sarcastic but those old silver-faced stereos of the 1970's-'80's are actually fantastic pieces of kit... proper hi-watt power stages instead of bullshit rmps (or whatever nonsense they use to big-up stereos these days)... the only 'leap forward' has been in reduction of distortion 0.0003% etc, which is no great deal as most of our hearing is not really that atuned to notice this...
i have 2 1980's marantz 70/140watt amplifiers that can seriously kick out db's... also a lovely 30watts p/ch amp that has no balance or eq knobs, just volume... made by alchemist and the 'perro's cojones'...

imo plasmas are the better type, as said already, especially for sport, fast moving games like football leave horrible fuzzy pixels around players heads when they move on LCD's.
and most plasmas these days have anti screen burn options, bit like a screen saver on a pc.

Ger what Samsung is that. I'm still deliberating over which tv to get, I was planning on spending around £800 on a sony w5500, but then I saw the samsung led super thin things in currys showing happy feet and was blown away. However it's £1500 in the store, albeit on pixmania at the moment it's down to £1090. I thought for an extra £300 quid, I might as well get something with absolutely no compromises.
Shit the bed though, because in tesco there was said tv, and on medium to fast motion, it isn't very clear and looks like false motion at times and quite jittery motion at other times. It's 100hz so I'd have thought that the motion blur thing wouldn't happen at medium speeds.
Also have a second baby on the way so, the missus isn't overly happy at the thought of me dropping a grand on a tv!

Mate it's the LE40A656A. I frickin love it. Blue Ray is PERFECT on it. They're probably down a lot on price now, I got it back in Sept. I'd actually like to trade it in for one of those thin LED models only for the price but for now, my TV FUCKING RULES :)

Well I think it's tremendous matey. £469 in Argos at the mo and they delivered in 3 days. Thoroughly recommended. Didn't come with a HDMI cable, and nor did my HD box but they're only £6 in Asda.
Just decided to hook my Xbox 360 up to it too, so that should be a cool setup with the size of the bugger!
