I do like Neil Young, but that version of A Day In The Life was pure, unadulterated shite. Sounded like a fucking pagan chant.

Could you put his playlist up? I'm really curious, cause I'm gonna go see him tomorrow at Hard Rock Calling, and I presume he's gonna have pretty much the same playlist. How was he otherwise?
Cheers!

Well, I watched an hour of The Specials on BBC 3 and they were incredible. Should've been headlining.

Energy, accuracy and they made thirty year old songs sound as fresh as if they were written yesterday. Everyone was going nuts. MAGIC.

Where? Which bit? At exactly what point could you see this?

I want times.

Minutes, seconds and milli seconds will do.

Thanks.

Really looking forward to Crosby, Stills and Nash.

They're on in two minutes. Not heard them for ages, hope they can still sing!

They can't.

Ok, to be precise, Nash and Cros still can (though the mix was a little brutal and highlighted every slight imperfection) but Steve Stills is deaf as a post by his own admission, and the set was obviously constructed to mask his imperfections. Also, extending perfectly workable songs like Deja Vu, Wooden Ships et al with elongated solos just smells of muso-wankery for its' own sake.

A fucking shame, as I LOVE their original sound and it hurts to see their current deficiencies laid bare like that - I'm hoping that Rick Rubin is going to sprinkle an awful lot of fairy dust on the covers album they're working on.

Um it was last night...she had this outfit on, and you could see her pants, and basically she was stood legs apart, and it looked like one of her flaps was hanging out the side of them. At least it kind of proves she is not actually a bloke.

I don't know what it was like the other day at Glasto, but I've just seen him at Hard Rock Calling, had a very good concert, and his A Day In The Life was great (as great as a cover can be - esp when the original was sung by the Beatles)...that's until Paul McCartney appeared on stage, and then it was madness! Couldn't believe my eyes that I'm at a gig with Neil Young and Paul McCartney performing a Beatles classic. It was quite an ending to the whole show (the Fleet Foxes were really good as well)

Can't argue with that mate. The glasto version was cack in my opinion, but i would imagine macca's presence would make it much much better.

To hoggy doggy and Jono.... guess I spoke too soon!

Three part harmonys only work when they are in tune! Not when two of the parts are as flat as a pancake. Only David Crosby leaves with anything like a performance.

Makes you wonder how many once good or even great singers still have a voice past say the age of fifty? I can't think of that many. More often than not the artist ends up sounding like a badly performed parody of themself.

Maybe this is a thread for another day but are there many singers who have improved with age..... Paul Weller perhaps?

The Prodigy were amazing, so much energy in their live performance.

Hopefully seeing them at Global Gathering.

Good god no.

Well, it's certainly got more gravelly, if that's a word. Elton John can no longer hit any high notes whatsoever.

Tom Jones' voice is still incredibly good, and he's 69.

Any others?

was just thinkin tom jones alright.
mike patton is 41,and even though that doesnt really count, his range of singing is unbelievable.he can still go from screaming to singing high notes exactly the same as he was doin in 1989.

edit- from wiki:
"Patton has earned critical praise for his diverse vocals, which touch on crooning, falsetto, death growls, rapping, chanting, mouth music, beatboxing and scatting" :-)

I think that's what it is, his voice is a bit gruffer which I actually prefer. It sounds a wee bit stronger to me aswell but then I don't like weak whispery type noises! He used to shout a fair bit more!

Tom Jones can still sing and is very nearly the same, he does strain sometimes but then he is nearly seventy! However most people just sound awful.

Bono, Sting, Elton John, Robert Plant are all terrible these days. Is it life style or are you just doomed to sound crap when your'e older?!
