no doubt about his crown as the king or prince of pop,
some of the 80's stuff is still brilliant, but there was and will always be that shadow?

Agree - cynicism aside - he was unique but his best work was along while ago.
A lot of the 'shadow' will be forgotten by many and hollywood will immortalize him as he died so young.

True keith, i never took to him as a person or agreed to whatever he got up to in his private life, but his contribution to music was second to none. He was outstanding. His albums were among my favorite and i still remember hiding behind the couch when thriller came on the tv. To be honest bridgeman, i agree that i would never have left my kids near him as there is never smoke without fire. But i don't know or never will know the facts around what had happened, the only thing i do know is that i enjoyed his music and his persona that entertained me for many years. I never paid any attention to what happened in his private life because it never effected me personally. That may be selfish, but thats the way i look at it. I enjoyed his music and nothing more:)

The Collins you refer to was Peter Collins who now hosts Formula 1 on RTE, Simon Young played "Jimmy", and it was "The Beatbox" ,Dub, spot on.
AS for MJ, "billiejean" is still the most iconic,ground-breaking, best combination of audio-video, ever made(IMO)After 27 years. RIP.

His music was very good, then turned shit after Thriller.
Nobodys mentioned the fact that he changed his skin colour and made his nose smaller, if I was an African American I'd have disowned him. He came out with that skin disease crap as well, there was definatley something very mentally wrong with the bloke!
I won't really miss him as 'as an artist' he was never going to release anything near as good as his earlier work (and I'm a heartless bastard).

I think he deserves to be mentioned in the same level as Elvis and guys of that stature. His music up to the mid 80s was of that level and whatever came after doesn't erase that. Even to the present day he was a phenomenal performer. Witness his anniversary concert where stars known for their physical performances like Justin Timberlake were cast into deeply into his shadow.

His albums Thriller and Bad will always be remembered, i think Billie Jean and songs like that were influential for their time. I think he was the first musician to combine good songs with artistic themes for the video genre in a major way.
He became a pitiful figure as he morphed from a blackman to a bleached ghoul. The child dangling was distasteful and potentially dangerous. Child molestation well even if he never actually molested children but there is strong evidence he did, there is absolutely something disturbing about somebody who shares a bed with someone else's child. Overall there is no doubt the guy was mentally disturbed, but produced great musical and visual media in his time.

I dont suppose he did mate, but lets be fair, Elvis wasn't exactly the full ticket either was he?
Was never a Jackson fan to be honest. He did some great stuff, primarily his Jackson 5 stuff (for me anyway) but love him or hate him, musically, he was an icon of our time. He may not have been as influential as Elvis or The Beatles to you but to some he was. In my opinion he wasn't far off Elvis and The Beatles.

The allegations will always cast a shadow over Jackson and unfortunately that's now part of his legacy.
The question about baby sitting kids is a bit misdirected (would you let any stranger?) and I've seen it here a couple of times. I don't have kids so maybe I'm not best positioned to answer this, but as it stands he was cleared by a court - i.e. innocent and the early allegations it was claimed that he paid the family off.
My question to you, if you had a child who had been abused by someone - is there any amount of money they could give you to stop you seeking justice?

Various similar things were said on the other thread.
People may find it strange that I like his music. I liked him when 'Bad' came out, but after discovering metal I got all tribal like most young people did and disowned him, especially as he was so hyped at the time. After the Cocker incident I was like 'yeah! Show that poncy twat!'
Didn't think much of his music for years, but a few years ago I began to be in places where I would hear it, and thought it was actually quite sound.
Now it's not fashionable to like him now, of course. Maybe there's a psychological thing going on.

Michael Jackson's family lawyer today blamed his sudden death on his inner circle pushing him too hard in the run up to a series of comeback gigs in Britain.
Brian Oxman, who was with the Jacksons in Los Angeles overnight, revealed the 50-year-old singer had been taking drugs for months in his battle to be fit for the string of concerts next month.
He suffered a massive heart attack and stopped breathing last night. His personal doctor, thought to be Dr Tohme Tohme, was with him but could not resuscitate him.
There is growing speculation today that the catastrophic cardiac arrest was triggered by an injection of the painkiller Demerol after rehearsals in his home town.
Paramedics were told he was 'not breathing at all' and rushed him to UCLA hospital where a team tried to revive him for more than an hour but he never came round.
An autopsy will be held in Los Angeles today but those close to the star believe it is an addiction to prescription drugs as he prepared for the gigs in London that killed him.
Mr Oxman, who was with sister La Toya and brothers Jermaine and Randy, blamed the singer's 'enablers' for pushing him too hard in the run up to the gigs which had been due to start on July 13.
'This was something which I feared and something which I warned about.
This is a case of abuse of medication, unless there is another cause that I don’t know about. Where there is smoke there is fire.'
He told CNN: ‘This family has been trying for months and months and months to take care of Michael Jackson. The people surrounding him have been enabling him.
'If you think the case of Anna Nicole Smith was abuse then that is nothing in comparison to what we have been seeing in Michael Jackson’s life.'
‘Michael had appeared at the rehearsals a couple of times. He was very seriously trying to be able to do these rehearsals. But his use of medications had become in the way and injuries he had sustained performing had got in the way.'
He added: 'He had broken a vertebrae performing and he had broken his leg in a fall from the stage. I don’t know the extent of the medications he was using but the reports that we have been receiving in the family were that it was extensive.’
Former producer and friend Tarak Ben Ammar echoed fears of drug abuse, claiming Jackson had been a hypchondriac who had been taken advantage of 'charlatan doctors'.
'It’s clear that the criminals in this affair are the doctors who treated him throughout his career, who destroyed his face, who gave him medicine to ease his pain,' he told France’s Europe 1 radio.
'He was a hypochondriac and one never really knew if he was sick because he had become surrounded by charlatan doctors who were billing him thousands and thousands of dollars worth of drugs, vitamins.'
Promoters of the shows at the O2 arena in South-East London had said in March that Jackson had passed a four and half hour medical with independent doctors.
It was hoped the This Is It concerts would revive Jackson's tarnished career after almost 12 years off the stage, during which he became ever more eccentric and faced allegations of child abuse.
When the dates were announced, promoter Randy Phillips said: 'He's as healthy as can be - no health problems whatsoever'.
Despite nagging fears for his health and fitness, the singer's representatives insisted he would be able to perform and the stage was set for the most expensive, technologically advanced shows ever.
Jackson badly needed the revenue from the gigs to stay afloat and they would have earned him as much as £50million.
Despite being one of the most successful recording artists of all time with hits such as Thriller, Bad and Billie Jean, he was believed to be $500million (£303million) in the red.
More than 750,000 tickets had been sold but concerns for the star grew when the first four gigs were postponed last month, although organisers AEG Live insisted this was unrelated to his health.
They were still selling tickets just 24 hours before he died and now face a possible £300million liability depending on their insurance small print. Fans have been assured they will get a full refund.
Too late: Medical staff rush Michael Jackson into UCLA Medical Centre after he had a massive heart attack
Police said that an emergency call was made from his house in LA at 12.21pm local time - 8.21pm in Britain - and paramedics raced to the scene.
The star, who has three young children, was not breathing when the emergency staff arrived, forcing them to try resuscitation procedures immediately.
Ten bodyguards had followed the ambulance to the UCLA hospital, where sources said Jackson had arrived in a coma.
'You've got to save him,' aides screamed as the unconscious singer was wheeled into an emergency room on a stretcher.
Sister La Toya was seen running inside in tears and later his parents Joe and Katherine arrived. A grief stricken' Janet Jackson was flying in from a film shoot.

Jackson's brother Jermaine revealed later how doctors fought for more than an hour to bring him back to life but he was eventually pronounced dead at 2.26pm local time.
In a highly-emotional statement in the early hours of the morning, he said: 'My brother, legendary king of pop Michael Jackson passed away on Thursday June 25 at 2.26pm.
'It is believed he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until the results of the autopsy are known.
'His personal physician who was with him at the time attempted to resuscitate my brother, as did the paramedics who transported him to Ronald Reagan UCLA medical centre.
'Upon arriving at the hospital at approximately 1.14pm, a team of doctors including emergency physicians and cardiologists attempted to resuscitate him for a period of more than one hour and they were unsuccessful.
'Our family please request the media respect their privacy at this tough time. And Allah be with you Michael always. I love you.'
Jackson had been very frail in recent weeks as he battled to prepare for the gruelling string of 50 concerts in London.
Last month it was alleged he was struggling to make even a handful of the rehearsals for the comeback tour. It later emerged he had been to just two out of more than 45 rehearsals.
One Jackson family source said at the time he was 'just not able to pick himself up out of the painkiller stupor' that he was in.
Despite growing fears for his health, his death sent shockwaves across the globe. Messages were sent on Twitter and Facebook by stars and fans alike as they tried to establish the truth.
There was soon little doubt one of the most famous entertainers in the world, who burst onto the scene as a child star with his brothers in the Jackson Five in 1968, had indeed died.
A source close to his family said: 'It's so tragic but he was such a wreck physically that all the signs were there.'
He had apparently been 'doped up to his eyes' for several weeks with anti-pain prescriptions including Vicodin.
'His back had completely given in and he was in so much pain,' said the source. 'his life was slipping away for so long. At least he is now at peace.'
Gossip sites were today awash with claims he had been injected with Demerol just before he collapsed.
One quoted a hospital source as saying: 'Shortly after taking the Demerol, he started to experience slow, shallow breathing. His breathing gradually got slower and slower until it stopped. His staff started mouth-to-mouth and an ambulance was called. He never regained consciousness.'

OK. Let's put it this way. If you were charged of abusing a child and were innocent and found to be so in a court of law should it matter that OJ Simpson may have got off with murder?
Why would I be charged of abusing a child? I have never slept with under age children (or ever will) or ever fed them alcohol.
He admitted to sleeping with children and giving them 'Jesus juice'. The guy is a weirdo, he totally went against everything that his race had been fighting for over the years (changing his colour) and still got treated like some kind of genius. It just goes to show that his popularity won over in the end. He paid off the 1st family and another case got thrown out of court because of the media intrusion.
Theres a difference between Jackson and Glitter, one got caught with hard evidence and one didn't. If a strange guy who had a lot of kids round his house, feed them booze and slept in the same bed with them who lived in your street was accused of being a peado, I bet you wouldn't take his side.
It seems that just because Jackson is famous, has made a lot of top billing records and has created a pop culture, does this make it right? There are a lot of people in the world who see him as a god/untouchable, which is wrong. If the law system works, then how come we are still fighting for justice over Hillsborough?
Oh, and the OJ thing, that was just to point out that you can get a way with anything if you have the right lawyer.

Just like the line from Lord Of The Rings (No Stupid jokes please) :-

Just got this in work...
Michael Jackson was also an inventor and, like other innovative Americans, a participant in the patent process. Jackson is listed as a co-inventor on US Pat. No. 5,255,452, titled “Method and Means for Creating Anti-Gravity Illusion” – an invention that allows dancers to lean forward beyond their center of gravity – at a 45 degree angle to the floor – without falling (as demonstrated in a music video for his song Smooth Criminal). Because the original method for accomplishing this had drawbacks, Michael and his co-inventors soon developed another means. This special footwear had a moveable hitch or post to which the footwear could be detachably engaged to allow the wearer to lean forward on the stage, with his or her center of gravity well beyond the front of the shoes, thereby creating the desired visual effect.
Another bow in the fight for his legacy.
