having been into trainers for over 30 years... from adidas kick to my latest pair... ''adidas top ten low''... it's all i wear on me feet (besides the odd pair of hiking boots)... what is it that makes a pair classic? why do some search out some rarer-than-rare crusty old shoes and pay a silly price for them?

retro is where it's at... adidas and nike have been re-issuing their classic ranges and even designing them modtro-style...

fotos welcome...:)

Oh and Nike Classics are shite

i think there is deffo some line some people won't cross... some trainer-heads won't consider nike seriously... me, well i grew up playing basketball and their air force trainers and boots were better than the adidas top ten and concord of the time... just feet better...

i suppose it's down to tradition... adidas made footy boots/trainers... nike made running shoes...

i made a 'lynchable' comment about some trabs... but for me the line of the sole doesn't work...

I recently got a pair of the Kegler Super but took them back. As much as I loved them they looked too big on my feet. At the same time I got a pair of SL 72s in black which I just love. They're my new favourite. My previous were my Chile 62.

My first ever pair were adidas Mamba. Been trying to get a hold of another pair but so far the sear is fruitless.

Been looking to get a pair of the adidas 35th anniversery editions #1, #13 or the Run DMC one's of which I can't remember the number (problem is there are a lot of fakes on the internet)

I'm with Ashy on the Nike.

er... not within my budget i'm afraid...

was there a 'class-strata-caste' thing with them trainers in the 80's? my bamba cost £18 i think, mamba being a bit cheaper, samba being a bit dearer...

where's red corner... this is his thread really... i fell out of real love for trainers in the mid 1990's when the price of vintage originals started getting really silly and the whole snobbish aspect really took hold... (same with guitars come to think of it)...

I get what you mean about too much sole, that's a pet hate for me.

I've been a nike head for a while. AMones, AMlight, Dunk SB, Court Force

these have been my last few purchases:

You're right. This is Red Corner's thread. I remember him writing he got a pair of Adicolor W1s which I believe are limited to 5000 worldwide.

I actually loved the way the Mamba looked more than then Samba or the Bamba even though I could see that they were the better shoes.
Do you remember the All-Black? I tend to group that shoe in with the Mamba, Bamba, Samba for some reason.

Yeah the cieros are really nice, good comfy fitting trainer.

As for the forest hills I couldn't tell you if they were exactly like the originals. I'm pretty sure the originals didn't have perforated uppers, although I'm not a big Adidas fan so couldn't 100% tell you if that's true.

I've gotta say, those W1s are beautifully presented. Check out the Anniversary edition Superstar #35. They also come in a wooden box. Limited edition and you couldn't buy them. They had to be won in the promotional treasure hunt or were given to you by adidas (I believe).

You fellas seem like true afficianados :)

I grew up in Nike footwear purely because they sponsored Rushie. Can anyone remember what those astroturf trainers were that they brought out circa. 87/88? They were black canvas with a large 'NIKE' printed around the heel in yellow lettering? Lived in them, wouldn't mind picking another pair up if they've ever been reissued.

I'm currently sporting ADIDAS Munich '72. White canvas, lovely cushioning, with a gold embosed '1972' below the ankle. Simple.

Qwaaaallity.

This thread certainly brings back memories.

Up until this week I had 3 pairs of W1. There was only 1000 made worldwide. I've been having a clear-out and have sold a pair of the latest Kegler, a 15 year old pair of Keglers ( never worn), a pair of Spezial with the Argentina blue stripes, a pair of Centre Court from 1986 ( never worn) and some others. I fucking love Adidas, they're like works of art to me especially the classics like Trimm Trab ( I've an Argentina Blue pair), Kegler Super, Grand Slam and Forest Hills. One of my favourite pairs is Forest Hills in navy blue leather and white stripes. They're the bollocks. Of the two W1 I've got left, well I'm keeping one pair as a collector's piece and I'm seriously thinking of wearing the other pair. Up until recently I owned about 36/37 pairs of Adidas and to be honest I've had a bit of an addiction, so now I've decided I'm only buying Adidas that I'm going to wear.

Behold, the FAC51-Y3. No, it’s not a late addition to the musical catalogue of Mancunian record label Factory Records, clearly, but a highly limited trainer from Y-3 (the brand created by adidas and Yohji Yamamoto), devised especially to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of legendary Manchester nightclub The Haçienda. The shoe’s design is a collaboration between Peter Saville (the original Factory Records graphic designer), Ben Kelly (the architect who designed the original Haçienda interiors) and Joy Division/New Order bass player, Peter HookThe trainers come in a custom six-sided, maple-bottomed box (the same shape as the Haçienda’s dancefloor) and will be wrapped in four sheets of tissue paper – two will feature Kevin Cummins’ photography of the club in its late 80s heyday, one will be adorned with Ben Kelly’s original design sketches for the Haçienda’s interior, while a fourth will reflect how the space looks today.

A DVD documenting a discussion between Kelly, Saville and Hook sharing anecdotes about the club, Factory Records and how they feel about that time in their lives 25 years on will also be included in the package – an excerpt from which is being taken especially for CR Blog. (We will post it up here as soon as we can).

The shoe, strictly limited to just 250 pairs, will be sold exclusively in the Y-3 Manchester store for two weeks before it goes on sale in Y-3’s Shop-in-Shop at Selfridges London, Y-3’s flagship store in Tokyo and other selected retailers worldwide. Best save up though, the FAC51-Y3 will be priced at a cool £345.

I hate Y3. Sorry Geo.

i'm not a shareholder mick...;)

to make 350 pairs of trainers in a nice wooden box with printed tissue paper etc is, in a way, art... like ltd edition prints that the great artists did in the last century... but i personally like me trainers to be trainers, wearable and in some way actually connected to sport...

so these hacienda trainers are maybe culturally cool for those that care about the madchester/manc music scene but not my cup of tea either...

same as the ian brown ltd adidas trainers or most other celeb-endorsed offerings where they are constucting a market for reasons that escape me...

same with guitars... who wants to pay an extra grand for a celeb-endorsed gibson les paul (see the irony there as les paul endorsed the gibson guitar )...

btw mick, how much would a pair of adidas manchester cost? or the kareem low v2? i've looked around but can't find prices...

Got a bit of a habit when it comes to trainers to be honest. Quite partial to Kegler Super.

Got two pairs of these, one of the pairs I picked up recently were originals from the 80's. Still boxed and unworn when I bought them.

..and the KS Ostrich are a fine pair too, but a bit to expensive for me (but I noticed they're sitting on a Nike box in your pic ;)).

Don't own a pair of Nike at the moment, not that I would never buy a pair. They make some shite, but then so Adidas.

As far as classic terrace footwear goes, it's mostly about Adidas but not all about Adidas. Nike, New Balance, Diadora to name 3 others played a part as well.

I'd definitely wear these...

good point gary... the adidas top 10 i just got have got a lime green sole... i will have to use indellible ink to cover them... maybe what the manufactureres are doing is making the originals 'more' classic by doing loads of 'cover-versions'... adidas only did the top 10 in the white with blue and red highlights (originally) and they look just great but the ones i got were £25 as opposed to £80...

Still on the hunt for those nastase's and the other night the lad I bought the awayday hills from had another auction for an original pair of gazelle's pristine condition no discolouring or anything, which is astounding considering they are about 30years old, they sold for £820 even came with the original box! which makes me glad I never bin my boxes

I don't think that was nike's design. They were a limited edition collab with a skate company called Supreme the original version of that trainer was completely plain with just the swoosh, tried to get my hands on the white ones with the red swoosh but they were more expensive than those ones!

Adidas and Puma end 60-year feud

The two brothers never resolved their feud
The German sportswear companies Puma and Adidas are to end a feud started 60 years ago by their founding brothers.

Adi and Rudolf Dassler started making sports shoes together in their mother's wash-room in the 1920s.

They fell out during World War II, probably over political differences, and founded firms on either side of a river in southern Germany.

On Monday 21 September, employees of both companies will shake hands and then play a football match.

It is a big deal in the cobblestoned Bavarian town of Herzogenaurach, where two of the world's largest sportswear companies are based.

When the brothers set up their separate companies in 1948 the town was also split, with residents loyal to one or other of the only major employers.

In a joint release, the two companies said they were making up to support the Peace One Day organisation, which has its annual non-violence day on Monday.

They say that the events will be the first joint activities held by the two companies since the brothers left their shared firm in 1948.

Neither group is now controlled by the descendants of its founding families, although Rudolf's grandson Frank Dassler raised some eyebrows in the town by working for both Puma and Adidas.

Since 2007, Puma has been majority-owned by PPR, the French luxury goods maker that also owns Gucci.

Adidas Group is much more widely-owned, with no individual shareholder having more than 5%.

Could someone explain to me the (seemingly uniquely) British fascination with trainers?

Is it a regional thing, or is this all over the UK, or what? And what does it stem from? I'm from South America, but spent a year in north England and it never failed to amaze me how much people cared about their trainers. I owned a pair for indoor footy, sure, but apart from that, I'm not going to wear them out to the shop or, heaven forbid, as I saw several times, to work.

Every pair posted on this thread is basically identical, apart from the colour, but there's an obvious fascination among men there with them. To the rest of us, I have to admit, it's like our wives' fascination with owning 30 pairs of pumps so they can match them to any given outfit - incomprehensible. But with them, we figure they're women and we can appreciate a certain level of insanity that goes with that. With you, it's just mystifying (at least to me).

It seems to be unique, and so I'm wondering if anyone would have any insight into where it comes from. I understand that asking you to explain a cultural value for something not in my cultural values is difficult, and I'm fulling expecting to be called a wool or what have you, but I'm just trying to understand it. What is it about trainers that appeals?

@redwanderer... maybe mr red corner could really outline the cultural significance of trainers as he's been wearing them since the early days when they were made out of wood... and is quite a collector/expert nay, authority on the subject...

for me, the idea that a 'limited edition run of 500' goes against the true idea of collectability... old classic trainers/guitars/records or anything are rare because maybe they weren't as popular as other things but to 'make' something rare can seem a bit contrived...

especially when they print the words 'limited edition' on things...

Am I ever likely to get my hands on some PT70 black/orange like the ones in the link below? are they make\restock more of these?

http://www.jdsports.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&cm_mmc=froogle-_-product_feed-_-affiliate-_-froogleprod&productId=397910

Says they are exclusive to JD. Surely that can't be right.

Adidas do a lot of exclusive deals with JD - fuck knows why

Anyway, re-issued Keglers are to be applauded IMO, although some Kegler devotees don't like them. Personally I've gone for the silvers with a nod to the Grand Slams

And then there's THIS pair which are exclusive to Hanon, which I wouldn't wear because I've got an irrational dislike of black trainees, but they've got to be the nicest pair of black trainees I've ever seen!

Iv ordered a pair of white trainers, now im looking for another colour. Iv been thinking of the Adidas Porsche Design S too. Although the above link trainers were my first choice.

Might just get these until something else that really catches my eye (and gets a nod from the mrs ;) ) .

These were the last 2 pairs that I bought. SL72's and Londons. Dunno why but lately I seem to like the ones that are black/red or around that colour scheme. I need a pair with some blue on now though :/

I have got these though which i got not so long ago...

They seem to be very "in" with scouse lads around my age at the moment and I seem to notice someone wearing them every time i go out the house.

They're nice. Shame the colour is not what I need at the moment, but the fact i get September and Januarys student finance next week means I have a few grand to blow on the trip to Prague and some new clobber/trabs so I may just eget them anyway ;)

Lets hope the sales are still on on 11th!

Go on you know how comfy they will be for getting about Prague in ;)

Top tip for student loans: Ask them for a copy of your consumer credit agreement with them. When it arrives check it to see if they signed the agent sig box on Stud loan comps behalf. If its signed nothing much, but it is not signed by them then its not legally binding and is considered statutory null and void (free money). Mines was not signed and neither were my 2 flat mates at the time. Enjoy the trip.

Hope it works anyway, ta mate!

I beg to differ. I bought a pair each of the silver and gold stripes but they did nothing for me when I actually saw them up close and gave the silver ones to my lad and sold the gold ones. The orange and lemon stripes are a fucking abomination. I saw them in JD and they look and feel cheap and nasty.
Those Hanon exclusives are pretty boss though. I love Kegler Super but struggle to wear them because I have to wear inserts due to collapsed arches. The original blue stripe are a thing of beauty.
However, you can't beat a pristine pair of Trimm Trab in the argy blue colourway or the salmon pink colourway, in my humble opinion. The most comfortable Adidas are, in my opinion, the SL 80 and the blue/gold stripe colourway that I'm wearing right now look the bollocks! I love the tournament Grand Slam with the green stripes aswell. I have two pairs! The last pair I got were bought off ebay, brand new, never worn and I got them for £55. The 1st pair I bought when they were released in 2007 cost me £104.99 so bit of a result I reckon!!

I thought about the Marathons for a while too. Nice.

The LA's yellow is just too much for me though.
