There was a thread a few months back on the same topic but I can't find it.
Anyway, J P Gaster of Clutch.

My word.
Seen them a few times, all very talented but I tend to do my usual stare at the drummer routine when he's playing.

art blakey... old-old school great drummer, band leader well into his 80's...
max roach... cooooolio...
buddy rich... tight, smoothe and devestating drummer...
elvin jones... i like his beat... olde school too...
jack dejohnette... miles davis band... one of the greats...
tony williams... was in miles davis' group aged 19 yrs... truly phenomenal...
billy cobham... all over the shop... killer beats...
as for rock/pop...
john densmore from the doors... listen up, hold the band together...
mitch mitchell from jimi hendrix experience... as good on the drums as jimi was on guitar...
ginger baker from the cream... heard a live album where he was seriously off it...
keith moon from the who... storm force drummer...
reni from stone roses... snare, floor tom and bass drum... his hi-hat work is sublime... coulda been a great session player, now he's a landlord...
ringo from them beatles... did more than his bit... 'tomorrow never knows' snare drum...
bo walsh from barenakedladies... brother of tim from northside... i've know this lad since he was a kid, wanted him to join me band when he was 14 years old... he's better than reni imho...
tony thompson... a lad i jammed with in the early 1990's...
sly dumbar... dubtastic... he understands what silence means... a maestro...
phil kirby from yargo... the best band to come out of manc... fact...
i have to mention king tubby, lee perry and mad professor... they used basic drum tracks and washed them with roland and wem copicat tape delay machines and other fx... creating all-new drum beats that show their mastery as composers... not an easy thing to do well...
all the drummers i've mentioned really know how to use silence... silence is what makes beats stand up... silence can be ruined by the wrong kinda beat...
ps... i've puposely left out south american, african and asian drummers as this seems to be a 'western' thread and not many of the above named drummers would come close to some tabla players...

sorry for hijacking your thread, but any drummers reading this that might want to buy some new drum gear I have some stuff I'm looking to get rid of:
Cymbals:
20" Zildjian A Custom projection crash: £125
18" Zildjian Z Custom rock crash: £80
16" Zildjian Oriental China: £20 (has slight crack on it, however in my opinion makes it sound a bit better - not even kidding!)
Entry level Sabian hihats: £20
Snare drum:
13x5" Pear Omar Hakim sig series: £160 without pro racket soft case. £180 with soft case.
Bass pedal:
Pearl Eliminator doube kick pedal (belt driven) w/ case: £150
Soft cases:
Protection Racket Deluxe Cymbal Bag: £30
Pro racket snare bag: £20
gear in bold are the only ones I'm willing to listen to offers lower than the listed price. All equipment has been cared for extremely well and rarely gigged, I'm giving up drumming after I done in my leg. First time in 14years I won't be playing, it's going to be quite wierd.
cheers, Joseph.

One of my all time favourites in mainstream music. Watching him in the fool gold video when I was a kid was the first time I knew I wanted to play on the kit.
ironic really how that was regarded as his 'funky-drummer-masterpiece' and it was basically a loop borrowed from james brown... the tune that effectively saw reni open the door for a getaway... (it did take him a couple more years to finally go...
i remember seeing them play at some uni in richmond(?) and i just watched his hi-hat work for the whole gig... very subtle and smoothe...

It's my right leg that's done in, it's nothing major or anything but when I was playing a while back and using my bass pedal leg I was getting a shooting pain. Only time it was happening was when on the kit, so went to the doctors got it checked out he said there wasn't anything physically wrong with it and as it was only happening when playing that I should give it a break from drumming then see how it is. So I took his advice, then about a month back got back in to the studios to jam and same thing all over again, still no clue as to what's actually causing it.
Here's the strange thing about my playing style.
I'm both left handed and footed, but my first drum lessons the school drum teacher refused to teach me left handed because it meant he had to switch the kit about. So I play right handed/footed. It's always held be back when I'm playing but it's never bothered me that much.
and yeah the Hakim snare is definitely my favourite snare I wanted one for so long and before I bought it I had the choice between that and I think it was a Mapex black panther. Had one shot with the Hakim snare and didn't bother trying the other

Frank Oz • (1975 - 1999)
Eric Jacobson • ( 2002 - present)
from wiki..Animal first appeared in the 1975 pilot, The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence:eek:, chained up in a basement cell when he wasn't onstage performing with The Electric Mayhem:cool:. He later became a main character on The Muppet Show, and his unrestrained style has made him popular with young people for decades.
Animal is a crazed drummer with three styles of music -- loud, louder, and deafening. He speaks in a guttural shout, often repeating a few simple phrases, such as "BEAT DRUMS! BEAT DRUMS!" or "WO-MAN!" In relatively calmer moods, he is capable of more coherent conversation, but these instances are infrequent.
Frank Oz says that he had his character down to five words: Sex, sleep, food, drums and pain.[2] Occasionally, two of those essentials, food and drums, are interchangeable. In The Muppet Movie, Dr. Teeth had to remind Animal to beat, and not eat, his drums. In The Muppet Show episode 110, when asked by Kermit if he preferred drumming to food, Animal replied that drums are food.
Animal's family life is generally non-existent, and outside of the band, the Muppet Show troupe, and women in general, he has no other relationships. A significant exception is depicted in the book The Case of the Missing Mother, which reveals the existence of Animal's mother, LaVerne. LaVerne is also a drummer, and it's implied that percussion skills are a family trait.
Although it is popularly thought the character was inspired by the wild drummer of The Who, Keith Moon, but in reality Animal is not specifically based on anyone.

Jeff porcaro. Drummer for toto and session drummer. Did stuff for steely dan which means he was the effin business as they only used the best. Poor lad died of a reaction to pesticide he was using in his garden. Oh and steve gadd is canny good too.

And yet you mentioned Lars Ulrich.
Ben Koller from Converge is probably the best drummer I've ever seen. I saw him live and he didn't miss a beat, which is amazing considering how technical their songs are.
Also, remembered being shown this vid on the net years and years ago, god knows what this kid is like now because this was fillmed about ten years ago!

In my personal opinion moon was just a pounder. He had no skill or technique and was only rated because he was mad and fast. His reputation as hard drinker and madcap fool inflated his drumming rep and if he wasnt in the who he wouldnt have been noticed in any other band. Ulrich on the other hand...overrated is something he most certainly isnt. I havent heard ben koller so ill give him a listen, its a shame theres probably hundreds of drummers like him who wont get the credit they deserve because they arent in big bands. Being in a big or popular band doesnt mean great drumming, ringo starr being the best example. Good drummer but great? No.

For modern drummers, the best of the lot is Eric Moore - the guy is INCREDIBLE.
Moore's just recently joined my all time favourite band, Suicidal Tendencies, so please check him out on You Tube. Amazing stuff.
Like the you lad from Mars Volta, Thomas Pidgeon, and I'll always have a soft spot for Megadeths ex-drummer, Nick Menza...always unbelieveable. Never before or since have I seen a drummer playing half the gig standing up !
Finally, after a 2 year search, and dozens of busted (so called) drummers, my band - Buck Satan & The 666 Shooters - has found a drummer. 16 yeras old (!) and the kid is incredible...a real prodigy.
We'll be giggig and recording by Autumn, when we do, I'll post some stuff onto this site !

Ulrich never let's any song flow or groove, he's always interrupting the groove, with some basic, basic 6th form fill. A terrible drummer IMO.
Saw Dave Lombardo play Battery and The 4 Horsemen at Download in Ulrich's absence...and he was awesome. The dwarf from Slipknot was also far better than Ulrich.

I went to see them around about 4 or 5 years ago and again 2 or 3 years back in the smallest of venues. I only like the Petitioning the Empty Sky album but they rarely play stuff off of it anymore with the exception of the saddest day. but live they are pretty phenomenal. Only thing I don't like about them is Jacob Bannons rockstar attitude off stage and for a band that "embrace" DIY ethics the fees they command nowadays and even back then are pretty stupid. A friend of mine was unfortunate enough to have had to put on a show for them.
but yeah pretty decent drummer and real tight live.

Really? Never heard much about Jacobs attitude to be honest. I saw them back in 2004, probably the same tour you went to. Spoke to him after the gig and he seemed really sound, thanked me for coming and gave me a free poster. He's an artist though so they all get a bit arsey from time to time don't they?
Obviously that was a fans point of view and not a promoters though....
As for the albums, yeah Petitioning is quality as is When Forever Comes Crashing, but I think Jane Doe is their standout album. Everything just came together with the writing and better production. The whole album is just amazing. The one I listen to most these days though is a copy of Unloved and Weeded Out that I got off my mate, so many great songs on there that weren't even released for years.

For me Petitioning is the only stand out one. Probably more to do with not giving any others a chance, but everything about that album is brilliant musically and lyrically aswell as the artwork being pretty cool also.

its just my opinion mate, but its got nothing to with him being an ass.i just think hes a shit drummer;)
carvalho sums it up for me in reference to groove nice and tidily below...i just dont feel he adds anything at all.not saying he should be throwing jazz fills all over the place, but in the songs especially the latest stuff where the songs should groove he just pounds ungracefully through them, and they dont breath at all as a result.

The fact he was in The Who is nothing to beat him with, it was his style that made The Who.Yes there are hundreds of great drummers out there who may be better than Moon just like there are loads of fantastic Guitar players you will never hear of.
But the reason you have heard of Moon is not only is he a fantastis power player but also because he had personality.

Phil collins is a better drummer than moon could ever hope to have been. Dont let phil collins' soft rock music get in the way of that. Hes one of the most respected rock drummers ever, hes made his mark through drumming not through being a drunken tool. Moon was a pounder and nothing more, if he hadnt have been such a tit he wouldnt have held much attention and the fact he was in the who doesnt mean much either as they were shite too. Influential drummer cos he was tit and hard drinker not because he was a good drummer.

Moon was a pounder and nothing more, if he hadnt have been such a tit he wouldnt have held much attention and the fact he was in the who doesnt mean much either as they were shite too. Influential drummer cos he was tit and hard drinker not because he was a good drummer.

Lars Ulrich is shite. Any drummer who can play a bit can play anything of any Metallica song, and make up there own bits which sound way better. As for Phil Collins, great songwriting talent and all that but journeyman drummer.
Buddy Rich is in a class of his own. Neil Peart is a very special talent.
The best drummer in rock at the minute for me is Bran from Mastodon.
Some of the jazz drummers are outrageously creative and skillful too.
Lars Ulrich? hahaha

The Purdie shuffle,

You can hear a LOT of John Bonham's feel for in-the-pocket grooves in Purdie's playing, IMO. And just to show you a little of that,

I believe Buddy was Neil Pearts mentor and teacher, in a kind of Luke/Obe Wan fashion.
Teesred, i appreciate you may like the style of some of the duffers you keep banging on about but they really are pretty ordinary.

that has nothing to do with it.
U2 are one of the biggest bands in the world, whether you like the music or not: average guitarist, average drummer, rubbish bass player.
popularity doesnt necessarily mean the band is talented.bands like minor threat, the ramones werent exactly bands with guitarists like steve vai and drummers like buddy rich.
a good drummer is one who can make up the perfect drums for any given song.most of the time its the subtleties in drumming that make songs groove and not the big crossover fills. its the reason why the drummer from jimmy eat world is great even though he doesnt do anything particularly out of the ordinary, and also the reason why les claypool failed the audition for metallica.slap bass wouldnt exactly fit in to ride the lightning:)
the argument here is that for me lars ulrich doesnt make up great drums, which is highlighted moreso in the more recent albums because the music isnt all that great and needs something to lift it.thats my 2 cents on it anyway, your quite entitled to disagree
edit-
an example, its bland, the mans all elbows, and half of it isnt even in time...

I agree about popularity not being a barometer for quality but metallica dont fall into that do they? I dont like u2 but to I certainly wouldnt say larry mullen and the edge are average, Ive joked around and said they were shit and the same with the who they are not shit just not my bag. At the end of the day lars ulrich is a great drummer and in my opinion there really isn much of an argument about it. Wether people are better than him can be argued all day and its a matter of opinon but the fact he isnt great isnt up for debate as hes proved it. I loved the last album and thought the drums were good, justice for all drums are tremendous as are are puppets and black album. Metallica have succeeded because they have always had four guys who are excellent at what they do.
I used to play drums and everyone has their favourites, my drum teacher would argue blue in the face ringo starr was shit. Its all about opinions.

Eric Moore, Nick Menza, Thomas Pridgen all superb...and Mike Bordin from Faith No More has always been massively under-rated IMO.
John Bonham AND Keith Moon were both amazing drummers.
Personally, I can't stand The Who, never have, think they're crap with a ponce on vocals and a nonce on guitar, but Keith Moon was the heart and soul of that band.
The fact that he and his mate, Olly Reed, used to knock back pints of aftershave, only serves to make they guys legend even greater.

By metal types I mean the kind of ones that only acknowledge the existance of heavy metal and hate every other form of music because it's not metal those are generally the type of person that would think Ulrich is the best drummer to ever walk the planet.
Also, Teesred - are you Lars Ulrich?

No mate. I just think people say hes shit because hes in metallica and is a bit of a plonker. At the end of the day everyone has their preferences but lars ulrich is not shit. He wouldnt have been in metallica for so long and been so successful if he was would he? Im not saying hes the greatest because he isnt but he deserves far more respect than some are giving him on this thread.
Oh and im not a "metal type", I like most forms of music.
In response to biglol, im not 12 I was just making a valid true point and that is metalica are better than any band youve been in and ulrich is most certainly a way better drummer than you will ever be.

Never seen Moore play live with ST mate, and yup...defo a strange career move for Wackerman.
You'd be refering to Ron and Steve Brunner. Yeh, the drummer (Steve I think) did leave, but Ron is still playing bass as far as I know.
He's got some big fucking shoes to fill too, picking up from the likes of Josh Paul and Rob Trujillo (who is wasted in Metallica !)...but apparently the kid has played session work and gigs for Sly & The Family Stone, so he must have some crazy chops of his own, cos their rhythm lines are fucking crazy...

Classic drummers include:
Nicko McBrain
John Bonham (for 'When the levee breaks' alone)
Bill Ward
Dave Lombardo
Igor Cavalera
Roger Taylor
Ian Paice
Wouldn't call Lars Ulrich a classic drummer, but saying he's shite is just childish.
