It could be an age thing but you're right. The odd song is fine but there's nothing that consistent. I remember being skint in 1986 and having to buy either Panic by The Smiths or Levi Stubbs Tears by Billy Bragg. Nowadays I could wait months for a decent album.

Billy Bragg is actually in the crowd for this, which I couldn't beleive. The age gap alone would keep me away, let alone the sub-brits set up.
Alright,The Milkman of Human Kindness was never a classic, but at least the Osbournes were never in his videos.
On another off topic slant.Has anyone else heard the new Volvo ad.They have gone for Hush by Kula Shaker.Another great band struck from the never sold out list.
Alright, they were shit, but you know what I'm getting at.

Kula Shaker. Paid £4 a year or two ago to see them play at the snowdome (or whatever its called) in MK, supported by local bands. Who, incidentally were much better. They (Kula Shaker) walked right past us, carrying their own equipment. None
of us cared. How the mediocre have fallen.
Wasn't Hush written by Joe South then made famous by Deep Purple? Wow what pointless information I possess at this stupid hour on a Saturday morning. I agree with the original point though.
Who's Billy Bragg?

In the days when singles mattered. I think Oasis were the last band in that category. The Smiths & Billy Bragg are still two of my favourite bands/singers. Got right into the NME when I lived in the UK late92-mid 93. It was a good education in indie music, I remember getting my glasses smashed at a Rage Against the Machine gig at London Uni (?). I found one lens and had to hold it up to one eye to find the tube station home.
I heard the NME did another hatchet job on Morrissey about racism. He slagged off the 'journo' who apparantly hadn't heard of David Bowie. Smash Hits alright!

Fuckin despise the nme,it now stands for everything that it was originally against = fashion and scenesters. I like what tom clarke of the enemy said while he picked up the best new act award. He said that too many bands here are sat there like they are too cool for school and dont acknowledge the fans who put them there. The nme are just right up the arse of the arctic monkeys and if their album was the best of last year then we are struggling, one trick ponies with fashion famous girlfriends. Thats the trouble with the whole indie scene now,its not about the music anymore its how cool you are first and music second. Years ago bands were cool because of the music ie the smiths, roses, oasis even the beatles and the stones back in the day were cool because they made great music. Out of all the bands around today how many of them will we be talking about in say five years? I can think of none apart from established shit like foo fighters, chilli peppers etc, big naff stadium bands. All the so called new bands are not classic material at all. I was talking to my mate about this and I said that in the last year I think I bought maybe 3 new release albums, kings of leon, hard fi and the enemy are the only ones I could think of all the rest were by old bands either disbanded, dead or forgotten. I am just totally disinterested in new music.

NME is shite but a lot of people write off anything associated with the genre or the time because of that.
Much as I don't like the Arctic Monkeys these days 505 is a great tune. Nothing like the rest of the album it is a really well thought out piece of music that gives me hope that AM might just have a bit more to offer after all.
There are a few with real talent that have produced and still could produce worthwhile music. Bloc Party, Arcade Fire and a very original band my mate got me on to called Midlake in particular.
These bands actually care about their sound and it shows. Like the great musicians of the past they innovate and are devolping their own sound.
I was not a particularly big Kings of Leon fan until I heard "Because of the times".
Kaiser Chiefs are alright but not my thing really and the Killers are very good but Sam's Town was a bit dissapointing compared to Hot Fuss, still enough there though.
The Strokes are another very good band and "Is This It is" a brilliant album.
Overall there is a lot of shite out there and given it is so mass produced it will drown out a lot of the quality but if you get through all of that there are still some very good bands out there with their own original sound.

And how is that different to Punk?
Oh that's right, Punk was in the past.
'Contempory' music will always be labelled shite by those not young enough or rich enough to be fully involved in it. And much like ex-footballers go on about the game being different now they will always say their time was the best because they want to think they were involved in the best. Don't get me wrong my favourite band are The Smiths but I still appreciate modern music fully.
The NME is a pile of wank but it's a good starting block.

I personally think that punk was intended to be an up yours to fashion all them years ago, when the likes of the ramones first started out their "look" wasnt exactly cool was it? Whereas now its become cool to look that way,im not saying that theres anything wrong with it its just the nme have made sure that its cool. Doesnt it make you laugh when you see people wearing band t shirts like those amplified ones? Supermodels and david beckham wearing clash and led zep tops. I just wonder how many of their albums they have. I still appreciate the good bands in modern music but I just dont think theres that many around.
In reply to REG,I too like the strokes but I was massively dissapointed with the third album and just hope they prove everyone wrong and come out with another belter soon,I also think kings of leon are the best around at the minute, because of the times is my favourite album in a long time.
