Would have been if it stopped after the original movies. The prequels can get to fuck as far as i am concerned. Absolutely shite. In my opinion of course.

I love Star Wars. Not in a geeky 'An AT-AT would be powered by some kind of servo-mechanism' type way, more just the themes and the boyish adventure of it.
The temptation of the dark side, the quasi-spiritual aspect, the familial saga, the political connotations. Its all good. All superbly represented by John Williams' superb leitmotif soundtrack.
Lightsabers are pretty sweet too ;)

Same here.
The prequels are worth it for the lightsabre fights alone.

Used to fucking love Star Wars as a kid.Spent hours in my room playing with my toys. One of the films, normally the first one,was always on at Christmas time.Wonderful memories I have of the whole thing.
I've have posted this before a few weeks ago but the clip below is well worth a look at the type of nerds you find that can't really let go of things like this.

For most of my generation (I'm 34) it was what we grew up with. I'm not really too anoraky about it, but The Empire Strikes Back is always at the top of my top 10 (see the film thread currently being discussed). A darker film where it wasn't just the narrative that took the centre stage, the characters were also given more depth. I think Lucas not directing heped that.
People were quick to dismmis the prequels, but the Revenge of the Sith is pretty good in its own right and AOTC wasn't too shabby. Unforuntaley they have had to battle with a lot more "blockbusters". It is worth remembering that A New Hope was the original "Summer Blockbuster" and is still the highest grossing film of all time(inlcuding the 1997 re-release.)
FTR: on the last census I put down "Jedi" for the what religion are you question.
I think to become a fully recoginsed religion the census required 25000 responses - I think it managed that and some.
Like I say, I'm no anorak

I dont often disagree with you but on this occassion i do. I think the prequels were a pile of mushy crap. Some of the fight scenes were really good, but for me it was a great dissapointment.

Is this the right place to say I've never seen 'Empire' (as I believe you types call it) and 'Jedi' only once? Seen the first one a load of times, but only once all the way through in one sitting.

Star Wars will always hold a special place to me as it was the first film I saw on the "Big Screen" and got me addicted to films.
By far the best in the series is "The Empire Strikes Back" but it was'nt because of the action and acting and story telling(all where great) but because for really the first time ina big big film the heros lose.
This was almost unheard of in movies at the time but this made the saga even bigger because of the elements.
To the new trilogy, don't get me started on fucking JAR JAR BINKS "Icky Icky Poo!" comments like that make me want to go up to the guy who did his voice smack him in the face and shout "Icky Poo this you bastard, you almost stole all our dreams" and then give him a couple of kicks why he was down.
I remember when "The Phantom Menace" came out, me and my best mate stood in front of the queue and there must have been 100 kids standing behind us with their parents, but you expected the kids to be excited waiting to get in, it was'nt it was us and the parents.
We got inside and then the music for 20th century fox started and all the adults cheered, it was great.(sadly th film stank of sheep turd!)
I have been to cinema a thousand times and only the Star Wars films had the audience cheering like they did, a truly remarkable experience.
Thanks great thread, grinning from ear to ear with the memories.:D

Apart from the Phantom Menace I love all the Star Wars films. One simply cannot beat them. I actually saw Return of the Jedi before I saw the Empire Strikes Back and so therefore I have more exitement about that as I saw it in a cinema, in Wallesey of all places.
Now when I see the film one of my favourite bits is when Princess Leia has already killed Jabba the Hutt and picks up her chain to get away and in bending over gives us a good look at her tits. I remember watching that in student days and all the lads giving it a big WAAAAY! :p
Anyway, I really like the second film; the fight scenes at the end are spectacular. I saw the third film here in Berlin and, what a film!

I think it's second to 'Empire'. Just finished watching it again and it's emotional reasonance is really striking.
He turns to the dark side purely to save his wife from dying. For love, in short. You would never have expected such depth after seeing Episode 1.

Man, I LOVED the original Star Wars movies. My Jedi and Empire tapes were worn thin. I didn't really care for the prequels (although I thought Revenge of the Sith was a great movie). They left too many holes in the plot just to try and make it seem like it should fit. Ah well, I still cherish the originals, the music, the effects (I still prefer people in suits to CGI rendered creatures).
I'm suprised there isn't plans for a special 30th anniversary dvd extravaganza with deleted deleted scenes and behind-the-behind-the-scenes featurettes

He's probably waiting for newer technology so that he can 'add' to the original trilogy.
Then we'll have the six DVD super de-lux fuck off set

Er...not quite. Jaws in 1975 was the first big smash of the summer (for Mr Speilberg). Titanic remains the highest grossing film of all time, but if you take into account ticket sales and inflation, Gone With The Wind is the most successful film ever, although Star Wars is high up both lists....
I'm not an Anorak either...:o

I'm not an Anorak either...:oSo is Pulp Fiction(only cost 8 million to make), as alot of the actors appeared for next to nothing as they knew that just being in a Tarantino movie could set their carears(spelt wrong) soring(ie. travolta).

The Empire Strikes Back for me.
Did like the scene of Annakin becoming Vader in Revenge of the Sith, thought that was really well done. The bit where the helmet closes shut, theres a pause and the breathing starts. Blinding that was.
As a side thing, check this spoof clip out. I still piss my pants when i watch this:

Apart from the "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" part which sucked in a big way, should have been a scream of anguish, not a shout of "oh shit, I've left the iron on again".
Still think the originals were better, he tried to do to much with the prequels, all the crap about the trade federation, picnics on Naboo, Anakin as a petulant teen in AOTC, don't really care thanks George. And in no way should he be allowed to direct love scenes ever again

I think I'm the first person in this thread to say I despise the Star Wars films. I think the point someone made earlier is very accurate - the reason most people hate the new ones is because you aren't kids any more...exactly who the films are aimed at. Think back to when the majority of you all watched the originals........

Wrong. The earlier films had alot more charm and the actors were a damn site better.Harrison Ford,Alec Guiness, even C3PO was a Shakespearean actor.
Han Solo and Chewie were funny,Darth Vader was a great bad guy,the whole design of the ships were far more original than anything else to this day as far as I'm aware and it is a classic sword and sorcery tale, granted, some of the lines sound cheesy as fuck now,but it's like a David Bowie or Rolling Stones album. You appreciate it for the time it was made.
Ziggy Stardust would be an absurd concept now and no one would buy it,but at the time it was fresh and exciting.I can listen to it tonight and still think that it's a fantastic album. It's the same with these films.
I bet your not a Bowie fan.

That's a fine analogy. Star Wars was never about the acting, just as classic albums are sometimes not solely about lyrics, rather it's the overall feel that makes it hold together so well.
