View Full Version : Favorite Film? and Why.

Simple what's your favorite film and why.
I am a complete film nut and my favorite is.
"Seven Samurai" by Akira Kurosawa.
First because this film still measures up to the test of time now.
Also thanks to Kurosawa's films mainly this and "Ikiru" we would'nt of had
George Lucas,Spielberg,Scorcese as they all admit that it was Kurosawa's films that inspired them to become film makers.
So what's yours.

I'm very easy to please.
Star Trek 4, The Voyage Home, because I would love to time travel and there is a message in the film, that if we make animals extinct, it may come back to haunt us in the future. Oh yeah and all the normal trekky thinks!!:D
There are others but this is the one that always comes to mind.

Good call on Kurosawa, I love Seven Samurai, Ran, Hidden Fortress, Sanjuro and Yojimbo.
My favorite film? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Why? It's just brilliant. The grandeur, the way it addresses the themes suggested by the title, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef, a certain Mr. Eastwood. Not forgetting the glorious soundtrack. And the scene near the end when Tuco is running around the graveyard feverishly looking for the treasure accompanied by 'The Ecstasy of Gold'. Magical. Majestic. Need I go on? :)

Everyone knows the "The Magnificent Seven" is a remake of "The Seven Samurai".
But did you know.
"The Hidden Fortress" is the film that inspired Lucas to make "Star Wars" and admits he altered scenes from the film and added them into "Star Wars".
"Yojimbo" was remade into "A fist Full of Dollars" and
"Sanjuro" was remade into "A few dollars more".
Have you seen "Ikiru" RedRich as you seem to love your Kurosawa(wise choice). As I think it's by far Kurosawa's most underated film and brillant acted from Takashi Shimura.

Yeah, I knew about the remakes. Star Wars blatantly owes something to Hidden Fortress. 'Ran' is also a reworking of the 'King Lear' story.
Haven't seen Ikiru yet but its near the top of my list. I've got Kagemusha too but thats not one of his best in my opinion.

Stil Reckon you see "Ikiru" first.
Also if you can get it(Rare as rocking horse shit my wife got me it for Birthday), "The Emporer and the Wolf" is a great biography of the working relationship of Kurosaw and Mifune. it starts at how they got into films and ends with there lives after their collabiration finished. It's a big book makes "Lord of the Rings small" but if your a film fan a fascinating read.

Withnail & I:My mis-spent youth. This film has alot to answer for.
Bubba Ho Tep:Wonderful indie flick about Elvis and JFK in an old peoples home, just try it.
Howard the Duck:It's a film from my childhood,I think I had my first crush on the girl from the film. And it's good so fuck off!!!.
The Big Lewbowski:Agreed on this film. Most of my favourite films have great dialogue.
Fight Club:Brilliant film by one of my favourite authors.Almost makes it sound like a good idea to get smacked in the face.

Withnail.
It's not just the comedy, it's the deprivation and the realisation that the decade is ending and they're not prepared for the next step. Marwood has to move on, initially to the cottage, just because he doesn't want to be with Withnail forever but he doesn't want to let him down. Then when he gets the part he knows he has to go and he's going to hate it. The sixties have finished and, as Presuming Ed has never failed to point out, they have failed to paint it black.
It's just a beautiful film where every line is hilarious or poignant. If it were American there'd be cinemas playing it constantly and Grant and McCann would never have to work again.

12th July 2007, 07:14 PM
Absolutely poignant ending too, where the viewer realises (through Withnail's performance of the 'What a piece of work is a man' soliloquy from Hamlet) that he actually can act and has no need to be the dropout that he is. The only witnesses to his ability are the dogs in the rain.
Brilliant.

Lawrence of Arabia
It is way up there in my memory of a film making a real impact on me for its way of both saying something and leaving questions behind that one would like to know the answer to.
I belive that there are only two types of moviemakers and one is that wants the best actors and dont care about the plot to much as it will make cash anyway , and the other is like David Lean looking for a story he would like to tell that he has a real vision about, and then cast the film with actors that can fit in with that.
David Lean was a master with his cameras.
I think David Lean is not given credit as often as he should for his movies.
I would say that Pulp fiction ( wich I loved ) is the total oposition to it ..

Usual Suspects is the best crime movie ever made in the states closely followed by Heat.
What I loved about Heat was it was the first film two powerhouses of acting are going to be on the screen at the same time and everyone expected fireworks and what do we get.
"Do you want to go for a Coffee?" Pacino
"Sure" De Niro.
Pure Class Michael Mann genius!

I love the part earlier in the film where Uncle Monty is trying to come on to Marwood - reaching around him to get to the 'legumes' - and Withnail walks in and cool as you like just says 'Oh, sorry' and just looks slyly amused to himself.

The strange thing about Withnail is that I first watched it at about half twelve at night on Channel Four,it must have been around 1990.
Never heard of it before I just couldn't sleep that night (I had double German in the morning) and my brother had a right go at me in the morning as I woke him up laughing during the urine sample section near the end.
Just one of those rare films that became popular well after it was released.

Kes has always been one of my favorites ...Brian Glover was awesome as the games teacher ..got to be one of my fave scenes ever ! Tottingham Hotspur.
Love the whole colour/light of the film too..harsh & bleak..serene & beautiful.
Really really northern.
Time Bandits is a winner too, John Cleese as Robin Hood belting peasants is great,& the giant with the ship on his head is insane.
The Man Who Would Be King .. call me sentimental but this gets me every time & Caine & Connery were sublime together in this one ..
Dawn Of The Dead.. just the best claustrophobic horror ever! 1978 original on a shoestring budget, the remake was an insult to this masterpiece. great soundtrack ..The Gonk is the tune that's playing in the supermarket !! brilliant.

My only gripe with the movie industry to day, that it's so Americanlised.
The European and Asian market especially do films that are ten times better than any that come from america.
I also saying to any people who have seen scorcese's "The Departed", watch "Infernal Affairs" which Scorcese say's his film is "Loosely based on" "cough" bullshit rip off!"Cough".
It even stolen not just scenes from the film but actuall dialouge from it.
Please watch Infernal Affairs, I know it's Japanese and people get off reading subtitles but the film is far superior than Scorcese's "The Deaparted" and that won fucking OSCARS!

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Great dialogue, chases, action, bit of gallows humour. Bish bosh
Top Secret. Probably equal favourite with Airplane of that genre.
Lock Stock, bar the non-performances of the non-actors in it.
The Hustler. Just because I possibly saw it 200 times in my youth.
GoodFellas. Just class, except I hate the bit where he 'breaks the fourth wall' at the end. Petty, I know.
Generally like em with a bit of a twist that makes you reappraise the rest of the film, like The Usual Suspects, Shattered, Vanilla Sky first time I saw it. Hated it thereafter etc

It depends what kind of mood I'm in. If I feel all girly and like I need a good cry, I turn to Pretty Woman or The Notebook.
But in all seriousness, I think my fave movie is Con Air. I've watched it so many times and still love it. Parts of it are bloody hilarious and the casting is brilliant, John Malkovich and Nicholas Cage etc. Cyrus the Virus is one of my fave characters ever in a movie.
I also love:
American Beauty
Philadelphia
Detroit Rock City (great for a laugh, hilarious!)
Dazed and Confused
Identity
Since I've finished school for summer, any night I'm not doing anything, I just pick a random DVD from my brother's HUGE collection. It's great, I'm watching films I never thought I'd enjoy.

American Beauty
I've always thought that was a waste of talent. The shopping bag in the wind is patronising in the extreme. Some good acting but a step back for Spacey and Benning.

Some good shouts already. For comedy, agree with Withnail and Airplane. Spinal Tap and Borat are also superb.
I'm a big fan of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown but I think Tarantino goes well off the boil after that. An underrated film is Donnie Darko - a bit pretentious but there's so much packed into every scene. I notice something different every time I watch it, and the religious element is fantastic. Not overdone or too obvious (like in the Matrix films).
Also a fan of what I've seen of Francis Ford Coppola - Godfather I and II, and The Conversation are excellent, although I haven't watched much else. A more recent films I enjoyed was The Constant Gardener, and I watched Fight Club again the other night. Superb.
If I had to pick one, it would probably be Donnie Darko. Withnail's up there, but I think I'm too young to really appreciate it all. Donnie Darko's such a clever film with so much depth and content that you could watch it again and again without being bored. Just quite hard to 'get into'. The soundtrack is fantastic - a great mix of 80s tracks and some good original stuff from Michael Andrews alongside it.

Damn, there's some great films here. And to pick just one would be incredibly difficult, it usually depends on my moods.
American Beauty - sorry Prince, thought it was a great film. Loved the getting fired bit. I'd love to be in a position to get the job with the least responsibility.
Contact - Jody Foster. Based on Carl Sagans novel, and pretty true to it as well. Reminds me of just how small and insignificant we are, and also how petty we can be.
Team America - Fuck yeah! Absolutely in your face, rip the shit out of everyone who's "anyone", and blatant piss take of Hollywood-ised buddy action movies. Kim Jong Il - "When you see Arec Barrwin, you see the true ugriness of human nature."
Appollo 13 - Just pure suspense. Still find it hard to believe it ACTUALLY happened.
Jackie Brown - Brilliance, utter brilliance. Winding, inter-weaving plot, and an utterly stupendous 70's R&B/Motown-esque soundtrack. Across 110th Street by Bobby Womack is one great song.
Apocalypse Now - A Masterpiece. Some asked how this film ever got made.
The Deer Hunter - Dark and brooding, tense and explorative. Covers a multitude of human emotion, feelings, and false & manipulated patriotism.
Honorable mentions - "The Untouchables", "Good Will Hunting".

Can't say a favourite.....
but my contenders would be.....
Horror : Evil Dead 2 (Dead by Dawn) Bruce Campbell and his chainsaw.....
Action/Sports/Comedy : 51st State (Robert Carlyle's Fowler shirt through the whole thing, and Meatloaf exploding in an exec box at anfield)
Comedy : Happy Gilmore (The price is WRONG Bitch!)
Sports : Any given Sunday (Pacino's half-time speech alone)
Chick Flick : Sliding Doors (Before she started naming her children after fruit)
War : Saving Private Ryan / Full Metal Jacket (too close to call)
Western : A man called Horse / Soldier Blue (again both powerful images of a time past)
Sci-Fi : Star Wars - Ep. IV a New Hope (a huge leap forward from what was about at ther time) or I Robot (a good adaptation of the books)

Have to agree on American Beauty.Vastly over rated, don't get me wrong,it had it's moments, but the plastic bag being filmed made me cringe.
The best parts were the one's that made me laugh. And the ex marine being a homosexual was about as much of a surprise as a panzer division creeping up on me.
I think Dogma should get a mention on here too.I haven't seen it in ages, but it's worth watching for Jat and Silent Bob alone.
The film they made on their own back was shit though.
Also on the list should be:
Rocky
Amelie
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
And
Ferris Buellers day Off (I will accept that it's dated badly)

A lot of my favourites have been listed here already and I agree with the reasons why other people listed them so I won't expand on them but suffice to say that I would class a favourite film as a film that I would never get tired of watching.
Braveheart - for the reasons mentioned already and the soundtrack.
Shawshank Redempemtion. Morgan Freeman is a class act.
Airplane/Top Secret.
The Godfather.
Pulp Fiction.
In addition I'd like to add the below:
The Outlaw Josey Wales - Big western and Client Eastwood fan. This is the best western ever made in my opinion. "Don't piss down my neck and tell me it's raining boy"
The Unforgiven - made at a time when great westerns were no longer being made, the transformation of Eastwood is class to watch.
Escape from Alcratraz - I love this film, based on the true story. Visited Alrcatraz and was mesmerized by the place.
Dances with Wolves. Great scenery and brilliant soundtrack.
Schindlers List Very moving film.
Tinhat

Zulu - just love this film, will always try to watch if it's on, as I will with How Green was my Valley,

For old films with a beer in hand............I would pick:
The Third Man (cinematography oh yes!)
Citazen Kane (just a great film and story)
Anyone have a top 10 for "HORROR" ??: My choice: Ring (Japanese version) .... tricky to retain bowel control.............

Favourite film has to be Kill Bill vol 1, Tarantino at his best (although I love all his movies).
Best thriller, loved Usual Suspects, Se7en & Silence of he Lambs
Hollywood blockbuster, Star Wars original trilogy
Most moving Schindlers List, reminder of how evil mankind can be.
Funniest film, The Nutty Professor (the original with Jerry Lewis), loved all his films when I was a kid.
I saw Seven Samurai recently and couldn't understand the 'ahead of its time" tag? Terrible acting, fight sequences that were hilarious, and just a little silly. Please educate me I must be missing something.
Oh and the sickest, Hostel !

Great thread but I don't think any movie lover can give a definitive answer of their favourite single movie.
I'd echo many of those others have already mentioned.
I'd add some of the following:
Ghostbusters. Very funny, great special effects for the time and 4 guys setting up in business having a laugh, fun, frolics and giant marshmellow man.
Once upon a time China. Doesn't get the credit it deserves. Really concreted the nu-wave of kung fu films with a great screenplay, score and a really powerful period drama.
Spirited away. A delightful, charming film. Hayao Miyazaki on fine form.
Grave of the Fireflies. A tragic, poignant and ultimately harrowing film. Hayao Miyazaki's darkest film with touches of charm, wit and truly delightful innocence.
Blade runner: Surprised no one's mentioned this yet. One of the few films that manages to be better than the book. (Considering the author was Phillip K. Dick, this is no mean feat)
Drunken Master II. This was hailed as the best kung fu film of all time when it came out. Also has the honour of making me get up off my lazy arse and finally find a kung fu school.
I'd also like to mention Midnight Run as it's De Niro's first foray into comedy.
I'd like to specifically echo some of Senior Rafa's choices of Korean and Japanese films.
There's so many more that I'll have to come back to.

Seven Samurai why it was ahead of it's time.
I think you have to remember this was made in 1953, nothing like it had ever been made.
It was also the first film to use slow motion and was the most expensive Japanese film made and stayed that way for nearly 25 years.
I am going to stop because I am a huge Kurosawa fan and could go on for hours and it is not fair on the rest of the people on this thread.
Everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion but if it was'nt for Kurosawa and especially Seven Samurai.
You would never have Spielberg,Lucas,Coppola and Scorcese.
So you would'nt of had Star Wars,Saving Private Ryan.Godfather trilogy,Taxi Driver. All these great films would never have been made due to the fact that it was this film that inspired these directors to become film makers.

Good thread....so many to choose from:
Comedy:
Life of Brian (genius all the way through) ; Withnail + I (for when you're hungover) ; Spinal Tap ("Stone Henge" ; can't dust for vomit etc...)
Thrillers:
LA Confidential ; Heat ; Usual Suspects (all absolute class)
Action:
Aliens; The Matrix (wish they had left it at 1 film) ; Hardboiled (John Woo, GUNS and a baby..who could ask for more!)
Others:
Shawshank Redemption; Jean de Florette + Manon de Source (watched back to back)
That's a very good list to which I would add Trainspotting , Crash and 6th sense.
My personal favorite, although probably not in the same class as many of the films mention here, is "The man who would be king" for the same reasons mentioned in an earlier post.

Some good films mentioned, some awful films also mentioned but thats the wonderfull thing about film, its all about opinions.
Almost famous one of my favourite films, brilliantly told story, great soundtrack and superb acting.
Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy, The opening sequence to this film is amazing, Jane Fonda is stunning. The film its self is very camp, and cheaply made, but that adds to the fun. Same could be said with Pink Flamingos absurdly camp, but a great film, by one of the campiest americans around John Waters.
Ichi The Killer, superbly made film. Takeshi Miike at his best, extremely violent but done in a very comic way. Very good film. Both Visually and performance wise.
Man Bites Dog - Rémy Belvaux film died not long ago actually probably oen of the best films of the 90's not an easy watch filmed in black and white, documentry style. Follows a killer and his day to day life, Benoît Poelvoorde plays the killer amazingly well. Times through the film you forget he is bad, his humour is very dark, but well put. His ideas behind his killing are bizzare but well told
Oldboy. One of the best movies ever made full stop. A beautifuly told story, amazing choreography, superb acting and an absolutly crushing twist.
Requiem for a Dream, i advise everyone to watch this, absolutly heart wrenching stuff, be warned its a very depressing film, but its beautifuly acted and made.
Howls Moving castle / Spirited Away / Princess Monoke (sp?) - Amazing Animation by studio Ghibli, i advise anyone to watch any of there movies to be hounest.
Toxic Avenger, haha cheap silly and poorly acted all the makings of a cult classic here, troma cinema at its best.
Im a big Zombie fan - So Fulchi films, Dario Argento, George Romero ect cant go wrong with a gore fest, specially the Italian ones.
The Wanderes - Before The Warriors we had this, great film, some good one liners "Dont mess with the Baldies" "Leave the kid alone" there better when said in film.
The Breakfest Club - again superb soundtrack, one of the best teen comedys ever made, superb script. Emilio Estevez at his best, a John Landis classic, same with Weird Science.
Metroplis - The animé one, nice film noir, based on the silent film.
there is soo much more, Once upon a time in the west / Memento / Bowling for Columbine / The Great Silence / Donni Darko / The Goldrush / Akira / Yojimbo / Dead Alive i could go on for hours about film.

Princess Mononooke, that was the first studio ghibli film i watched, the ending is beautiful, one of the best endings ive seen in a film.
Oldboy you have to watch a few times to really appreciate it, its so well made. The ending you just dont see coming, its one of those great moments in cinema, you really feel for Oh Dae-su (Crash is another film thats made me just feel really shocked - The part where the little girl jumps infront of her dad, i just gasped automaticaly). Cant speak highly enough about that film.
you really should watch Man Bites Dog one of the best performances ever to grace the screen.

Seriously though if anyone likes their korean movies.
"Brotherhood" and "Welcome to Dongmakgool" two great films based on the Korean war, I can not rate high enough, these are really great films, one makes the battle scenes in "Saving private Ryan" looks like an episode of "Rainbow" and the other is such a beautiful ,funny, thought provoking and moving film I have seen in years.
As regarding to "The Lord of the Rings trilogy", I am a huge book worm and a fan of Tolkiens books and had read "Lord of the rings" many times, but also after readin "The Hobbit" for me if Jackson get's the scene where Gandalf and Bilbo meet up for the first time in years right, the rest of the film would work. but the latter is film that lingers in the memory more(if you know what I mean).
Nice one for getting them Kopit3 you will not regret it.
Also get Ikiru by Akira Kurosawa, pretty hard to get but from E-bay you can get imported versions(play on any dvd) quite cheaper, have to admit there is one scene that had me wiping tears from my eyes.

Cheers I knew the book was a messed up title name, great film though.
The book's set in a post-nuclear holocaust and in a strange way the atmosphere reminds me of Crime and punishment. Not so much dark and brooding like the movie, more hopeless and a little unbalanced. If I read the word Kipple one more time I'm gonna jump off a bridge.

Senior and Never Offside have you seen Twilight Samuria, Zatoichi and Dolls (the last 2 starring Takeshi Kitano)?
All really fine Japanese films.
I also bought Stalingrad on DVD but it was Dubbed! Only the first 5 mins got watched.
There is one movie however that works excellently, dubbed.
It's called Crystal Fist starring Billy Chong. From the same era as Snake in the Eagle's shadow and Drunken Master. One of my favourite movies of that era.

Yep seen those.
Kitano's from Osaka from the same place as my ex-fiancee so I know a little about him.
He used to be a stand-up comic employing a very Osaka-ian sense of humour which they don't really care for in Tokyo (partly due to the Osaka-Tokyo rivalry). It's a bit like Liverpool and Manchester. He made the jump to ultra violent vigilante/cop/criminal very well considering he was best known for making people laugh!

No Ang Lee made a beautiful film in Crouching and brought the Wudan films back to mainstream. Thanks to crouching, Hero and House of the flying Daggers would'nt of made it mainstream.

I should add it's a Takashi Miike movie.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0142181/
"A young Japanese salaryman is sent by his company to a remote Chinese village to evaluate precious Jade that is found there, but before he arrives meets the yakuza who was sent to tail him to protect his bosses interest in the company. When the men finally arrive their mission become sidetracked by their interest in a mysterious young village girl, her haunting English language song and the secret that makes men fly like birds."

Was mentioned on page three by me ;) .
Hmm the better than the book motif, not sure about that myself. However, having read the book a long time after seeing the film it was easier to visualise.

Another question - Original or directors cut. Personally Dir cut for me.It leaves you to think a bit more.
The 'Director's Cut' was the original. Studio bosses told Scott to make the now notorious changes because the yankee doodle audience struggled to understand the first screenings. Hence the 'theatrical release' was spawned.
There's no comparison between the two. It's amazing how a few simple changes can really bugger a film up. I believe they're releasing both versions on one DVD later this year.
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is not as dark or oppresive as the film, so full marks to Scott for stamping his own vision on the story.
Anyone seen "La Hane" or Irreversabile.
I saw Irreversible a couple of years ago. My other half walked out in protest during the first scene, came back five minutes later and walked out again during the rape scene, never to return. She was kind enough to let me finish watching the film before systematically tearing strips off me for not pushing the eject button after the first ten minutes. Women eh? Admittedly, both scenes were unpleasant to watch, although pivotal to the film.
I have it in my collection now (much to her disgust), although it's not the type of film I would watch over and over. Still a masterpiece though.

Hats off Sir
Nice to see that there is someone ells having a remembrence of the old masters and their masterpieces from the past.
Did you notice that some nearly picked their top 25 films ?
I am glad the Phonebook dont come as a film, it bloody be on someones list
:rolleyes:The problem today most films are so "americanlised and "let's see who could spend the most money on a film".
The best films to keep an eye out for are the small indie movies or anything from Japan or Korea.

Very good choices.
Love delicatessen and The city of Lost Children thought Amelie was okay but the wife loves it.
Anyone seen "La Hane" or Irreversabile.
You mean "La Haine" right ? One of my favorites as well. I donīt have a favorite film but if I had to pick one it would probably be Pulp Fiction.
A couple of more very great films that havenīt been mentioned here so far (or I donīt remember it...):
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
North by Northwest
Sunset Boulevard
It's a Wonderful Life
The Breakfast Club
Clerks

I saw Clerks 2 on a flight over to America in Feb. It kept making me laugh loudly while most people were trying to sleep.
Particularly liked Randall's interpretation of the Lord Of The Rings/Star Wars debate :D
Oh, and Jay's bizarre Buffalo Bill style dance to 'Goodbye Horses'.

Honourable mention for 'Thirteen Days' from 2000 starring Kevin Costner and Bruce Greenwood.
The events of the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 depicted as acurately as the history books have so far uncovered. Costner at his least annoying and Greenwood's Kennedy is superb.
Maybe a bit sober and long for some but the dramatic parts are really tense so well worth sticking with........and to think we were that close........

Good film, some great bits of action but to me it was Die Hard (TAMED) where was all the swearing, smoking.
Don't get me wrong but I think the film lost some of it's persona when they took out 99% of the swearing.
He get's to say "Yippe Kiay........" and thats it does'nt even say the rest of it.
Accept for that though good film and thought Justin Long played the computer nerd well and fantastic cameo by Kevin Smith.

Yeah,it wasn't really a Die Hard film, more of a standard action film, could of been called anything.I did like it mind even though the ending was far fetched. And I thought the whole film was far fetched, but the ending really pushed it.
