help with my monitor

I was wondering if anyone could help me, i want to use 1280 x 1024 resolution but when i "right-click" on windows and go into properties, it only shows 1024 x 768. i know my monitor can go use 1280 x 1024 because its stated on the box and has been said it can on other forums. i have a Geoforce 7600GS graphics card if that has anything to do with it.
