Can anyone recommend a good broadband package for a Packard Bell laptop? My Dad's currently using AOL and its fucking shite beyond belief....ie the time it takes for pages to download.

Also a good anti-virus programme - currently using Norton Antivirus but tbh it means f*ck all to me....is this any good or should I/he get something else?

Any help much appreciated.

I use SKY but I wouldnt recommend it.

My brother uses Toucan, never had a problem with it.

As for Anti Virus - Norton is not bad, there are a number of free anti virus out there - I currently use (note these are all free)

Avast Anti-Virus
Cyberhawk
Spyware Terminator
Ad Aware
Spyware Blaster

Never had a Virus yet...... touch wood!

Don't bother with the free AV software.

Just get full, pro programmes for free off any torrent site. ;)

I use a laptop, AOL and Norton's Internet Security and have had no problems. Great download speeds. Occasionally slow pages, but it is probably down to something auto updating itself in the background. I proved this once. Well except for getting wireless in the first place, but that was the modem's fault and a quick email to the people that made it sorted it out. It is surprising what a safety pin can do!!
Sorry hope I am not too late.

norton av isn't so great - its massively bloated and virtually impossible to completely remove if and when you decide to switch.

i use nod32 (google it) which is much lighter but stronger too.

big dutch - cant you just drag the pics from their folder to the dvd drive folder?

Incorrect function is a tricky one as it can be down to a number of factors.

But try this first: (I assume your running XP)

Go to My Computer
Right Click on D drive
Select Properties
This will open up another box

The last tab is Recording - Its self explanatory from there but the box that says enable recording should be ticked.

The reason why this gets unchecked sometimes is due to any CD burning software you are running such as Roxio. When your run (even after installing) Roxio or certain similar products it unchecks that box so you have to manage all your burning through their application, not sure why they do this as you've got the software so there is no real perceivable benefit for the company.

If that doesn't work - try this:

1. Go to the Start Menu, then click on Run...

2. Type in "regedit" and hit the Enter key or click the OK button.

3. Once the Registry Editor is up, navigate through the folders at the left (by clicking the "+" signs) until you get down to this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Explorer

4. Click on that Explorer folder/key. In the right side of the registry editor you should have an entry/value called NoCDBurning. Double-click that name.

5. In the window that opens you will see a place for "Value data." A 1 here enables NoCDBurning, meaning you will have NO CD burning. This will definitely stop you from being able to use your CD-RW drive to write. So if you have a 1 here (as I did) then this may be your problem. Replace the 1 with a 0 to disable NoCDBurning, thereby enabling CD Burning. ( Did Microsoft really have to go about this backwards?) Click on OK.

If that doesn't work or is set to 0 - try this (a bit more drastic)

Right-click on the "D" drive
down to properties
then to hardware

Your cd/dvd burner will be listed. Then..

double click on the cd/dvd burner listed there
click on the "driver" tab
click "uninstall" at the bottom

This will make it so that it won't appear in My Computer but don't worry. Restart your computer and it should be there, working properly - Your machine will automatically detect the drivers and Cd burner on the reboot and install.

If these don't work then let me know and i'll suggest some other alternatives.

At least my current bout of insomnia is being used productively.

Norton AV is no good my friend it is massively over bloated in that it takes up a lot of your computers resources. I use Nod 32 which along with Kespersky6 is rated the best on the market.
Aol are a bunch to be wary of, for anyone that works in the computer industry they along with microsoft are the anti-christ. When you try and leave Aol you will be messed about no end, threatened with bills to pay etc, it really is a painstaking and laborious task but see it through and do not forget to ask for a migration code otherwise you will not be able to get another ISP. I would get your dad to look into Sky broadband i have heard good things about them. I am currently with BT but i really would advice against them as so far it has been very poor. Look around and ask around as i am sure that the good people on here will offer there advice and from that you will see who is rated the best.
I hope this helps

I assume (always a big mistake) that the address book you mean is the basic one with Outlook Express / Windows if that is the case there is a way to export it but you do need Microsoft Excel and possibly Word to do what you want in the way you explain. If you want just a list of your contacts you can export your address file into excel, if you do want to print labels for each of your contacts then that excel file can be used in word to produce sheets of labels for each contact or one label for each contact only. You do need a bit of info about the size and makeup of the labels and the sheets they are on but it is pretty straight forward (from memory) If you don't have MS Office then I am at a loss to offer any other solution.:o let me know and I will try and put something together that will make sense.

1 AVG anti-virus (free) is excellent
2 Don't like Norton but some people do!
3 I'm using BT and it's OK - there are loads out there though, try that moneysupermarket.com - they analyse broadband suppliers
4 how old is your Packard Bell?
5 you might need a memory upgrade to get it running quicker - I recommend 512 MB RAM - 256 MB RAM might be borderline
6 anti-spyware - SPYBOT
Good luck

Thought I'd jump on the back of the thread:

Why is it that some websites (and LFCOnline is actually the worst offender of all! ) take FOREVER to load?

I'm on a 1 Mb connection & using Internet Explorer 7 with the Google toolbar, and Kaspersky 6 on my machine, and find the speed of this site incredibly frustrating at home (it still takes time at work, but not to ridiculous extremes) - most other websites I use regularly take only a second or two, whilst this one can take up to a minute or more!

Granted, my PC is only a 1 Ghz processor & has less than 512 Mb of RAM, but the CPU useage is low, and even RAM levels (including Virtual Memory) aren't extreme.

Is there a setting(s) I can tweak, to speed the damned thing up?

Your pc is taking ages because of the specs mate.they are not up to processing the graphics fast enough, especially java based content. What cpu is it a pentium2? i would suggest a new graphics card which should help speed things up but tbh mate i would consider upgrading, especially if you want to use your pc to watch streams etc.
there are ways of changing the browser settings but this is not recommended as it is not helpful to the host server. I think REG once started a thread on tweaking mozilla firefox's browser and it was Vin that explained why changing the settings was not good.(cue Vin)
I am sure i have been no help at all,i am studying networking and data structures and should have been able to explain myself better but i was working last night and not been up long.
Incidentally, are you aware that you can bring your pc up to spec and to operate at an acceptable standard for around £150. If you need any help i will build it for you, gratis of course.
I would smash up my pc if i had to wait 2 and 3 mins for a web page to load :D Good luck mate
oh i forgot. Kaspersky anti virus is highly recommended(i have the latest) but since i swapped from avast pro to kaspersky it has slowed down my pc noticably. I suspect that it is slowing yours down markably too.
Lfc online probably is slow because of the huge amount of stress on the server. Maybe they need to upgrade. It is usually because you are waiting for a response from the server which has all it resources in use that it takes so long, don't worry it usually gets there eventually :)

Cheers for the response - I actually upgraded the graphics card last year (it was on shitty onboard graphics up 'til then!), so I was already on the right lines! :)

Funnily enough, the response ain't bad tonight, though I think turning off temporarily the 13 Gb bit-torrent I had running has helped!

I'm slowly working my way through a piece by piece upgrade - the aforementioned graphics card, an additional hard drive, new DVD Re-Writer, extra RAM etc. I'm now at the point though, where any extra ability is only going to be added by way of a new CPU &/or motherboard, so it's on the back burner for a while now...

No problem mate, anytime.
Regarding the bit torrent, it all depends on how you have set it up and what bandwidth is allocated, but i presume you have full duplex transmission of data so the torrent should not make any difference.
I suspect you actually know what your doing by the way ;) you have it loaded full of memory, you have upgraded the G.Card, HDD and DvD r/w so all that is left is the mobo and cpu. When you do upgrade if you are not going to spend a good whack on a duel core cpu i would recommend an Athlon XP 2500 barton core which is perfect for over clocking and gaining good performance. They are about £20-£30 ish on ebay. I suspect that when you do upgrade you will have to upgrade the memory as well. A 1ghz cpu uses what i call legacy memory.
Anyway mate, good luck with your project, i have to say i build pc's myself and it is quite satisfying when you finish one with good specs for a fraction of what they charge from Rip off World et al. :)

None if you can tell me how to resolve the \ntoskrnl.exe file corruption that has currently plagued by laptop without having to use the XP recovery console!

Otherwise its a pint an answer!

Reason I asked is I don't understand how hotmail is effected if you are viewing on the web unless your hard drive is very full.

Depending on your pc spec the fragmentation can take a while.

Sounds like your pc is infected with adware/malware/spyware

1. What browser are you using?
2. DO you only use the pop blocker provided by a "toolbar"
3. What security products are you using ie anti virus, spyware, adware etc

Ok. Not sure what the aol browser.

I would recommend the following:

1. Go Trend Micro (Housecall) website and scan your pc for any infections. Even though you have McAfee it maybe missing or not finding hidden files. I run 2 different anti-virus apps and also regularly scan using the online tools.
If any infections are found Trend Micro will call will clean them from your pc

2. Download the following free software to run alongside McAfee
- Spyware terminator http://www.spywareterminator.com/

Install and run another scan (note once installed you only want real time shield so do not activate HIPS or Clam AV - although there is no harm if you do)
The program will detect and clean any intrusions, it also updates automatically and actively monitors while your on the web

3. Download spybot search and destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/

Update and run another scan. You do not need to have Spybot running all the time only when you want to run a scan.

This should clean off any infection.

For additional protection - you may want to download spywareblaster (again free) and Ad-Aware 2007 (free edition).

I'm not sure how secure the AOL browser is, I'm not a fan of AOL. If you can use Firefox as your browser with the Adblock plus plugin, its much safer than IE and removes most ads from most sites

Hmmm, sounds like you may have visited one or two spunkey sites at one time or another.

There is a free software download called "adaware" that is pretty good for getting rid of these types of things but I doubt it will stop all of it.If you browser is getting hijacked you will need some very up to date anti virus. There is a good one called "AVG" which is free. Also "Windows Defender"which is free from Microsoft for Xp and Vista.

I would recommend all three of these as different software finds different problems, but I bet it won't stop all of it as it's probably latched on to your registry keys at some point. You might have to have it looked at if you can't get rid of it,which no one likes to have done,so wipe "hunk.com" from your internet history:D.

I doubt that has anything to do with defragmenting your hard drive.

I'm assuming you download emails via the hotmail.com or .co.uk site.

Are you receiving other mails? If so then its probably :
1. Your mate is typing in the wrong address
2. If he is trying to send attachments they maybe too big or contain a virus
3. How full is your hotmail inbox? May have to delete stuff from your email to free up space.

Install the program. Then run it from the start programs menu - remove all Instantshareddevices entries only

If the pop-up box is stopping you from accessing the browser - go to task manager (ctrl + alt + delete) and stop the task from there first before following the above steps

Well I'm off the bevvys for a month or two as part of my health kick! Just good to know the advice helps!!

Just out of interest - did they return once you re-booted the pc? Errors like this are usually down to corrupt registry entries - it may return the next time you boot-up (switch on) your pc as it may run at startup.
