Smith to sell Liverpool medals
Former Liverpool captain Tommy Smith is selling all the medals and memorabilia from his highly-decorated career at Anfield.
The tough-tackling defender made 638 appearances between 1963 and 1978, winning four league titles, two FA Cups, two UEFA Cups and the European Cup.
Smith's collection amounts to 75 lots and is expected to sell for an estimated £120,000 when it goes under the hammer in Chester on February 22.
"I had a wonderful career but the memories I've got are more important to me than the medals and the shirts," the 66-year-old told the Liverpool Echo.
"I'm not skint, I don't have to do this, but I'm getting old and the money is of more use to me now than the medals.
"It's not as if I've been used to having my medals all out on display at home and seeing them every day.
"I hadn't seen them for about two years as they were in the bank and I just thought, what the hell are they doing there?
"They are worth an awful lot of money but no one is benefiting from them all just sitting there; it's not helping me and it's not helping my family.
"I want to ensure one day I'm able to leave them some money."
I don't normally post but....
Surely Liverpool FC should buy these from the man and put them in the trophy room??? :(

You beat me to it by 2 minutes. They say the whole lot will make about £120k less commission etc that's less than £100k. The club should get on the phone and make him an offer!

They didn't do it in 1993 so I doubt they'd do it now.

More's the pity. Maybe the new owners will see things differently. Americans seem to value sporting memorabilia quite a lot from what i've read/heard.

Kind of sad really but I can see where he's coming from. He still has contact with the club doesn't he? I'd assume he's already approached them. I don't understand why they wouldn't buy them. Some of our players might be getting that a week.

Some of our players could buy them with their weekly wage:cool:

I'm going to disagree with everyone so far and say that the club shouldn't by them.
He says himself, he's not on hard times and he's only cashing in on them. They obviously have no sentimental value to him.
From the interviews I've heard with Smith, he doesn't come across as a particularly pleasant person.

I haven't been in the museum for a few years, but from memory it's littered with trophies but not many medals. They might be a nice addition.

Seconded, But then again I prob should post more to.
Understand the sentiment for sale: The Club or Players need to pick the Lot. Its History after all. Liverpool Football Club History

If the club won't do it, I'm sure the players could have a whip round and just about afford it.

I can think of one person who strongly disagrees with that.
That said, if I could afford it I'd buy Smith's medals and send him pictures of them every day - the loathsome, racist twat.

If anyone has an interest in the national game they should do the same.

Didn't Riise give his Champs League medal to his brother and it ended up on e-bay?

Urban myth. He pretended to in a phone video.
I hate it when people slate the legends.

The guy was a legend he must cringe when watching the game today as he could not have played under today's rules and interpretations.
I remember being at Man City's ground in early 70's when at half-time as the players walked off he and Emlyn had a right go that nearly came to blows also when Shanks dropped him for a game at Highbury and he simply walked out of the ground and caught a train home before the ko - I also remember his headed goal in European Cup Final and his no nonsense approach to the game one of the really true hard men of his era.
I don't see Club buying past players medals out of sympathy or whatever emotion or cause that he has them up for sale but I am sure some fanatic will find a good home for them where they will be more appreciated than sitting in the bank - good luck with it Smithy I am sure you know what you are doing.

Very quick to jump to Riise's defence as ever. Anybody would think the guy is your hero.

He started trying to give the medal away but once his reputation as a medal-giver-awayer was established he just went through the motions.
Ray Kennedy sold his medals in 1993 - something he regrets doing but had no choice at the time. However he does have a glass replica of the European Cup the club gave himi in 1981 but it's got a crack in it after he put it in the dishwasher!

I knew Sid Moss, who was Vice Chairman of the club for some years. He had a lovely house, as you would imagine, with a fully fitted bar in the cellar. The bar had loads of these replica glass trophies. Apparently they were commissioned after ever trophy was won and given to people in the club. I knew directors got them but didn't know players did as well. They were fantastic. The memorabilia in that bar was staggering.
Unfortunately Sid Moss died some time ago, but I used to see his wife at the match for some time afterwards. I've not seen her for some time now. The house has been sold. They had no children and I often wonder what happened to all the Liverpool stuff.

Actually, Smith was a good footballer and would easily cope with playing under today's regulations. Players like Smith used to kick shit out of opponents in those days simply because they could get away with it.
