View Full Version : What makes football so fantastic

Let's be honest, football is absolutely brilliant, I don't just mean "yeah its really good to watch", I mean it really is a truly fucking brilliant invention.

I know people wouldn't have known any different before football was invented, but I have thought about how lucky I am to have been born after it's invention.

What exactly is it about football that is so fantastic though ?

In most of our lives it's not just exciting to watch, it's important too.

Just me as an example (and I must be 1 in millions), I play football twice a week, I watch football every week, I discuss football with all my mates, the only forum I frequent is one for the team I support and Saturday is my favourite day of the week, not because I'm not at work (I love my job), but because football is on Saturdays.

Why does watching 11 men who I don't know from Adam (not Charlie) beat another at football make me so bloody happy, and them losing make me so down-hearted ?

How can a sport have so much bearing on so many peoples lifes between the ages of 7 and death.

When you think about it, it is a bit odd.

Anybody have any reasons they can think of ?

No, I do the food shopping myself (although I absolutely refuse to ever cook, as it makes me really really angry), and never on a Saturday.

Well leading football thinkers would suggest that the spherical nature of a football reminds man of the earth. Football arose at a similar point in history to when man finally accepted that the earth was in fact spherical and not flat. Before this revelation man could not fathom having full control of the entire world as it was believed you would just fall off the edge if you travelled far enough, however as a sphere it is possible to discover and thus control the earth.

Football as a game therefore represents man's desire to control the earth.

Opposing views would argue that actually its just a fucking brilliant game, and that I made that top bit up, because I'm bored.

I can't even begin to explain how excited I am for this season to get going. Unfortunately I am working all day tomorrow so I will be relying on this site for decent updates on the Liverpool game.

It provides an escape from reality and an opportunity to be part of one big family who all believe in the same thing and can share the pain/joy of a lifelong shared experience.

Personally I think it is as close to a religion as you can get without it actually being one.

My "religion" is football and my church is Anfield.

I like this answer a lot.

I especially like the bit about it being a shared experience.

If you asked a group of people about their feelings after experiencing something together, I bet you'd have a very wide range of emotions and level of emotion ranging from "it was alright" to "Fucking incredible"

I would have thought every Liverpool supporter at the end of the Istanbul game, where Dudek saves against Shevchenko would have felt an almost identical feeling to one another.

Men like Dalglish encapsulate all that is great about football.

My mom watches Liverpool on tv because football is less complicated than tv dramas today. Old people wants their life to be simple. They don't want to have to think too much.

Football was an escape from realities of life for me. Now that I am married, would I still be bothered?... On with the new season. YNWA.

Been looking forward to tomorrow for a while. Around mid may. Pub seeing mates not seen in 3 months, game seeing mates and the Lucas hater I've not seen in 3 months, back to pub to celebrate, curry, home, MOTD - quality.

Sunday is for making up to the family for being AWOL for 12 hours.

Wow red4life86, that sounds great. Makes me wish I'd never emigrated to the US. Love how loud the pub is when we score, superb. Then the curry, damn so delicious when a bit pissed up. Then on a full stomach you sober up and get in for MOTD! Amazing...I wish that was my Saturday tomorrow.

Kennys first proper game!

Well Dids, I'd suggest Jesus could gradually be introduced at CB, to eventually replace Carra. Who'd have thought it though ? Son of a carpenter going on to replace Carra. Would have thought we'd have needed a bigger name.

miller0863

I've consulted my legal people and being drunk doesn't excuse the crime, still suing. That signature has bugged me like NWR's "pointy birds" effort.

But what would you do if Jesus came to Liverpool?

I'd point out Kenny and tell Jesus that Anfield already has its Messiah and that he should look elsewhere.

I would put a joke about why he could not play for us either, but in these sensitive times I don't fancy getting banned, especially not at the start of a new season. Maybe he could try and convert the heathens up at Old Trafford or Goodison?

Come on you Reds!!!!!
