Statement of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign

The bereaved families of the HJC learned the names of the newly formed panel from the press. Although representatives from the Home Office had informed the group yesterday that an announcement would be made today, they did not give any further details. However it transpires that certain areas of the press were informed last Friday of the names of panel members. This is clearly unacceptable.

Once again the Home Office, in spite of a stated aim of transparency and accountability, has chosen to ignore a substantial number of bereaved families. The HJC has consistently requested that the Home Secretary afford equality of access and information to all families – once again he has chosen to create a hierarchy of information dissemination with the HJC being below the media in the pile .Any confidence which was being nurtured between ourselves and Home Office representatives has been seriously damaged by this latest action.

Once again we have been excluded from the decision making process in relation to our deceased loved ones. If this is the way we are to be treated then we have little optimism in the eventual outcome of the panel's report. In any event we feel that the terms of reference of the panel mitigate against the full truth being publicly acknowledged.

Representatives of the HJC are due to meet with the Chair of the panel next week and will make the views of the families known.

Thank you for your continued support.

JUSTICE For ALL.
